I agree with 8. As fans, we know every year typically about 3 to 5 teams actually have a shot. With 8, enough teams get in to satisfy the UCF's or TCUs of a few years ago.
16 is way too many. Do you think #16 WVU or UK would stand a chance against Bama? Sure there might be an upset now and then, but i think end results of 8 of 16 teams would be the same.

FCS can add as many as 5 extra playoff games for a team without a bye. I guess the NCAA thinks FCS athletes are more resilient.

Honest question, haven't they always been? I mean even back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s usually only 2 of the bowl games meant anything substantial. For example, if the Orange Bowl had the AP #1 playing the AP #3 (or UPI) and the Sugar Bowl had the #2 playing the #4...those were the only two that meant shite. The rest were just for bragging rights. What has changed? I've been wondering for a few years now where this attitude is coming from. To me, it has always been like this.

That was when bowl games and their stats werent counted in the NCAA record books.they are now and are not exhibitions.

I think we mean 'exhibition' in the sense that if you aren't in the playoff..the overall game is just bragging rights. Yeah the stats pile up but for what purpose?

So by this logic, Alabama would have been kept out last year because they didn't play in the SEC Championship? Georgia gets in because they won, and you would have to take Auburn before Alabama? I'm reading this rig
Yes. If you can call yourself the best team in the sec west, you cant call yourself the best team in cfb.

You're following up until the AU part. They would not have been in contention because they had 3 losses after the SECCG. My point was more relevant to this year and more specifically a one loss conference runner up.
Say an undefeated Bama beat an undefeated UGA in the SECCG. After the game, the playoff committee has to decide what to do with UGA sitting at 12-1 and ND sitting at 12-0. Should UGA be penalized for losing the conference game while ND sat home? I say no. But that's likely what would have happened because 4 spots is just too restrictive when you have 5 major conferences and an independent like ND playing playoff buster.

Of course it is a meaningless (I know some sensitive folk on here don’t like that word) game as it is a non playoff game. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good for building depth, securing a ten (10) win season, seasons end reward for players, etc. There are positive takeaways, but in the context of the playoffs, it is meaningless game more akin to an exhibition game with positive financials for LSU.

The posters who are more preaux or anti coach O than they are pro-LSU are gonna wait to see the results of this bowl game before weighing in on its meaning.
Posted on 12/6/18 at 4:54 pm to RipEffect
Get rid of all conference championship games and take the best 8 teams in the country, period. No one can bitch that a non-conference champ got in.

Who cares what Tim Brando thinks? He’s a basketball guy.
Posted on 12/6/18 at 4:59 pm to RipEffect
Except for the 4 teams in, 100% of the Bowls are exhibitions. That’s CFB.

Ncaa record books.
Coaches wins and losses.
Things we measure success by.
Success isnt measured by just titles.
But i definitely get what youre saying.

There is already a 10 team playoff. Just make the conference championships round one.

Ah. I thought you were talking about under an 8-team format, in which case two of the best eight teams in the country could DEFINITELY be in the same division.

I've always been for a 6 or 8 team but Brando acts like that's gonna end all controversy.
Every time I hear Brando speak all I can really take from it is Brando thinks he's an expert (I've been doing college football games since 1982) and most of the rest of us are stupid...except for the famous folks he can name drop.
Hell Tim Verne did college football games longer than that.

5 automatic conference winners
This should never be a criterion for getting into the CFP.
The only way having that as a requirement works is if all conferences across the board have schedules in which all teams in the conference play each other and have a true champion. This will never happen, so the requirement for it should never happen.
Not to mention, what if Northwestern had pulled an upset over Ohio State? Does Northwestern deserve to be in the CFB because they had one good game again tOSU? They would be a 9-4 team getting to play while much better teams ahead of them get the shaft because NW had the benefit of playing in a shitty division.

Tim Brando is a glorified exhibition.

They’re all consolation prizes. Right now even the playoff system seems merely symbolic. It made sense when we truly had multiple teams who legitimately could make a case that they shouldn’t be left out. But lets be honest with ourselves here. Does he really think there are actually 7 teams which truly have a very real chance of beating Bama in a championship game this era? If not, then what’s the point? Other than the fact that it makes a nice soapbox moment on a radio show, does he really believe UCF would have beaten them? If so, he’s dreaming.
Until there is more parity in college football, it’s not worth worrying about.
