If they would have used a more vertical design similar to the corner boards this would have been great. Only 30% taller than the old board so that’s a minimal gain comparatively. We could have had the same number of pixels (cost) with a different design and it would have been more effective… but ads

Overall I don't mind it. Seeing how they can put basically the same thing on two halves of the screen suggests that they could use the entire Jumbotron as a single unit.
I will say I'm not a fan of seeing individual ads like McDonald's, etc, mainly because they're plastered all over the rest of the inside of the stadium.
But again, seems like they could take it off just as easily as they put it on.
I'll wait to see it in use first.

It’s over 30% taller than the old screen.

quote:100% agree. It definitely needed to be taller- it’s disproportionately too wide for the height- the actual screen is no bigger that the old one it appears especially with the static graphics on the side that will be up for the vast majority of the time. . Oh well.
hate to be negative but it's a really shitty design. Should have been higher and narrower for use with true replays and such rather than long and skinny to accommodate digital ads/score/playcount. Seems like a waste to go this direction when it could have been twice as big of a viewing area had they gone more vertical

Well, I think we have to see it in person during a game before we can truly give an honest opinion

I mean it’s a bigger increase than going from a 55” TV to a 70” TV. That’s only a ~27% height increase, while the new video board is ~32% taller.
It doesn’t look that much taller because they made the new screen nearly twice as wide. Also because the old screen had trim across the top of it. But it is considerably larger than the old one even if you ignore the extra space on the sides.

Just fricking horrific
LSU is so god damn bad at everything project related.
I keep saying I want a bathroom renovation for the south end zone where k sit but maybe I don’t. They would likely frick that up

Feel free to cut a check to the school to take those ads down.
It isn’t ads, everyone has them. It’s how gaudy and cheap looking we are with managing how we put advertisements out there m
LSU has basically become this

I’m also not sure why people would expect an entire 152’x37’ screen to be covered by actual gameplay in the first place. Aspect ratios are a thing. Video shot in 16:9, with a screen height of 37’, would be about 66’ wide. That’s roughly 40% of the new 152’ screen width. Which looks like… about what they used.
Do you buy tvs and only use 40% of the screen?
I'm fine with the stats and all on the screen. I just don't understand the point of spending money on an expensive arse video board for ads. Go print out some bill board crap and put the stupid OLOL and Coke and FootPenis Whitney Bank signs on that.

Well no, but I also don’t have to have separate room for the score, clock, stats, ads, etc. on my TV at home.
Since it’s Friday and I didn’t really feel like accomplishing anything at work this morning anyway, I took a look at how the overall usage compares to the old video board. I loaded pictures of both into Bluebeam and scaled them to known measurements so that they can be overlaid.
First thing I noticed is that the published measurements for the old video board only include the center part, not the static ads on each side:

Note that the LSU logos at the bottom of the static ads are covering speakers. I’m going to count both the static ads and the LSU logos under them as “ads/unused space” moving forward, because that’s what it is.
So here is the layout we’ve seen for the new board compared to the old one (when accounting for the additional space where the ads were located):
New Board

Old Board

And here is an overall size comparison between the two, since I (rather stupidly) didn’t capture the two images above in the same screenshot and I’m now realizing they might get resized in folks’ browsers:

And here is how the individual sections compare. Note that in some cases (such as the ads/unused space) I had to rearrange since it was hard to compare them otherwise. But the the sizes of the individual squares are unchanged:

Ironically, the unused/ad space actually increased the least. This is largely because of the space under the static ads previously that couldn’t be used at all.
Meanwhile the majority of the added space went towards giving better stats & information. This is a great thing IMO.

I find it pretty funny that people are complaining about spending money on ad space when it’s the one part of the video board that literally pays for itself.

Anyhow, I should probably do some actual work at some point today.

Will it end up having any sort of border like the old ones have? Just curious.
I assume the back will be wrapped with the purple LSU sign per usual.

Agree, but I guess we'll have to wait and see how they actually use it in game.

Always wondered why they didn't do that. The NC/SECCG years can be displayed in the same manner as the retired numbers if they feel the need to do so in addition to the flagpoles.

Saban was right LSU fans have Catastrophe syndrome. Never happy. The quality alone will make this one of the better "Score/Video Boards" in the Country NFL included.

I'm curious how the speakers are going to sound compared to the old ones. I was under the impression the acoustics couldn't improve due to the layout of the stadium, but hopefully the sound quality is better. The previous speakers would suffocate every song with excessive bass.
