FIFTEEN TO NOTHING, ONE ABSTENTION

People are asking how you throw a school out of the SEC. Here is the actual answer, and then the reason it does not apply.

The bylaws require a vote of the member institutions. Historically three quarters. That is twelve of sixteen.

There is no cheating clause. No trigger. No formula. Expulsion is a business decision the other members take for whatever reason they like, which is why it has never once happened over rule breaking despite Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee, LSU and Kentucky all having served probation.

The conference punishes with money instead. Withheld revenue, championship game bans, censure. And SEC distributions run past fifty million a school, so it bites.

Now the situation, which is not what people think it is.

Judge William Jorden of the 19th Judicial District in East Baton Rouge Parish issued a temporary restraining order stopping the NCAA from enforcing eligibility limits on a group of athletes. The case started with former LSU linebacker Jack Pyburn and now covers thirty three athletes across multiple sports.

The argument is that players who enrolled in 2022 and burned four years should get a fifth under the NCAA's own new age based eligibility policy.

The SEC responded by voting fifteen to nothing to penalise any school that rostered those players. Coach suspensions. Fines in the millions.

LSU abstained.

Plaintiffs then added the SEC and Greg Sankey as defendants, the judge blocked the conference from enforcing its penalties against covered schools, and on Saturday the SEC announced it will comply with all applicable court orders.

So nobody is defying anybody. The SEC made a rule, a court enjoined the rule, and the SEC is obeying the court. That is the system working exactly as designed and you cannot expel a member for following an order that binds the conference too.

And it is not just LSU.

Texas has Cole Hutson practising after two NFL minicamps and a state injunction. Kentucky is expected to sign Mark Mitchell, who played NBA summer league. LSU has Dae'Quan Wright, waived by Cleveland, and Zxavian Harris, formerly of the Saints. Two LSU soccer players already took the field against Arizona under the same order.

Kiffin is simply the fastest man in the room, which has never once been in dispute.

The preliminary injunction hearing is Thursday the third. LSU hosts Clemson two days later.

Here is what I actually think.

This is not cheating. It is the amateurism structure dissolving in real time, in fourteen different courtrooms, and everybody in Birmingham knows it.

You cannot vote out a school for obeying a judge.

You can only write a rule that survives one, and the SEC has not managed that yet.

Fifteen to nothing, and one school abstained, and that one school is the only one that read the room.
