Sadly he’s going to get like 3 years… losing the game the way we did was depressing.

Why was Miller dribbling the ball when he had 5 turnovers? That was one of the worst play calls I’ve ever seen

I really kinda feel bad for the guy.

He's in over his head. That's pretty clear which affects how he recruits and in turn, how he coaches the players he has.

He seems like a nice guy and all but when there's no leadership, from anyone, and I'm not suggesting he's apathetic or doesn't care about the program. I think he's doing what he can but it just isn't enough. I think the strength of opponents and expectations weren't what he was expecting.

frick him he sucks. It was a horrendous hire. We can all argue on if Wade should have been fired but I think it’s clear hiring McLoser was a horrendous move. Even worse was giving him 8 years

I don’t feel bad for anyone making nearly 3 million a year to suck at his job. Then when he gets fired, he will get paid millions more to go live on a beach.

McTurnover will coach another 3 years at LSU. We will start over again with a new coach in a situation like at the end of Johnson and Jones eras.

My guess is he is here through year 3. If it’s still similar to this he will be gone.

He was melting well into the night with a thread after the Vandy game. I hope he is just on a West Coast time zone or something.

Anyway the transfer portal opens on March 13th. Hopefully we keep our bigs and a solid point guard becomes available. Adding to that one position would be huge for this team next year.

If next year is anything like this year, which at this point it’s looking that way, I don’t see how he gets a third year but due to his insane contract he probably will.

"massive" is a bit of an overstatement.

His average annual salary is $2.9M. That ranks 3rd among the 6 new coaches hired in the SEC coming into this season, and only about $500k above the lowest paid coach in that group.

Many keep saying it is an 8 year deal. That's only if LSU gets hit with a postseason ban (they won't). So it's a 7 year contract. That is longer than the other new hires got, but I don't think LSU would have to pay the full remaining contract should they fire him early. It's not something you want to do. But in the grand scheme of things buying him out after this season is workable...particularly with the influx of media money set to come into the league soon.

I think he at least gets one more season because Woodward won't have the guts to try to hire Chris Beard and it probably doesn't make a ton of financial sense to eat the bulk of McMahon's remaining contract only to hire another mid-major coach...which is always a crapshoot. If next season is a bad as this season (or only slightly better), then I don't see how you can justify keeping him in an age where it has never been easier to build a team. The notion that building a program takes significant time is just flat out wrong.

And on that note, the "he's having to build under a cloud of impending sanctions" is a BS argument. TO HIS CREDIT, he actually built a team that everyone thought would at least be competitive. While not an exact science, his signing class (transfers and HS players) was ranked 17th last season. For comparisons sake, below were the teams ahead of LSU:

Duke
Arkansas
Texas
Alabama
Kansas
Kentucky
Illinois
Ohio State
Michigan
USC
Tennessee
Indiana
North Carolina
UCLA
Virginia
Auburn
LSU

I think most would agree that is not bad company. Yet, LSU is EASILY the worst team of that group. So the whole notion that this season was completely the result of a "terrible" roster doesn't hold much water unless you believe the ranking got everyone else above (except for Ohio St) right, for the most part, but LSU completely wrong.

This in NO WAY, SHAPE, or FORM, should have been a last place roster. So the biggest concern moving forward is if this is the result of what should be a decent roster, what is the result going to be of what could be a WORSE roster?

Again, no one is angry that LSU didn't compete at the top of the SEC this year, or that they aren't going to the NCAA Tournament. Neither were expected. The frustration comes from the fact the coach fell miserably short of meeting the lowest expectations for the program in years and the future in no way looks promising.

Honestly, all joking aside, I think coach McMahon should be at a lower tier school where he can focus on organizing sports events or fundraising.

Matt seems like a good human being in our community but I really believe he is in over his head at a P-5 school.

I do feel some empathy for McMahon but unfortunately that doesn’t help our basketball program going forward. It’s not Matt’s fault. Scott should have never brought him to LSU.
