Interesting how everyone is so hypocritical when it comes to sports and their own lives. No one wants to “have” to stay at a company for 3-4 years when other companies want you and are willing to pay you a lot more. But… everyone wants athletes to have to stay and not have options.
Dude, this is not the insurance sales industry or a bunch of consulting firms. In pro sports every player signs a contract that prevents them from just leaving and signing with another team that offers them more money. They have contractual obligations that require them to stay for the duration of the contract. The real working world doesn't usually have this.

I look at it like this. LSU has major advantages that most schools don’t.
1. Talent Rich state & no in-state competition
2. They belong to the most prestigious and richest conference in the country.
3. They have a very passionate fan base that is very willing to go above and beyond to support the program.
#1 and #2 matters much less in the "NIL" era. LSU may be a Louisiana kids dream school but if Miami or Oregon is offering them a million dollars more than LSU, 95% are going to be gone. Not to mention UT, A&M, etc right next door.
#3. Again, sure a passionate fanbase is good for recruiting, but if your recruiting against any of say, 20 major programs and they are offering the kid significantly more money, your probably losing that kid.

Now… it’s all about building a winning culture where most kids don’t want to leave even when given the opportunity.
Lots of companies don’t lose top end talent, even when other companies come after their talent. Why? Great culture to work at.
It’s the same in football. You build a culture where the players thrive in, love being a part in, and they are making great money, most aren’t leaving
This sounds really nice, but college football is a 4 year ride, not a career job where one has put down roots, has young kids in school, is part of a local church, other factors that keep adults in career jobs from jumping to other companies. Many recruits now are kids looking at college football as 3 to 4 years of a chance to make as much money as they can wherever they can get it.

The transfer portal is not good college football. Some players abuse it. Look at the OL from Bama. He transferred once Saban retired and went to Iowa. The transferred back to Bama like he never left. Other players transfer every year bc they can make money.
Yes some like Burrow and Daniels leave to have a chance to either start (Burrow) or develop or play in a better offensive system/coach (Daniels).
Mostly it is abused by players looking for top dollar instead of development.

How can jumping to a different school every season be good for anyone?
Collegiate football is supposed to develop character not a drifter’s lifestyle.

No it’s not
We need contracts. Like the nfl has. This is a business. I’m not entirely sure how it would work if you don’t have the ability to trade. But I think this could all be fixed if the required a player to give at least 3 years to a school. Then you can transfer, or go pro. I don’t know, but this free for all is honestly unlike anything I’ve ever seen in professional sports. It’s like watching a different game.

One. Preseason rankings were always “moot “.
And B. A player being able to sign and immediately transfer even before spring practice starts does hurt a bit.

Loyalty does not exist in American life any more....So why even assume loyalty.
Everyone has a worldview. That worldview will inform one as to whether loyalty is virtuous or not. IMO, it is noble and good and we should work to promote loyalty, not merely accept its demise. And that's true in the CFB world as well.
quote:- you make some good points in this thread and some with which I will disagree. Hope to interact with some of the others. For now, it's a foolish errand to destroy the foundations of that which is great, i.e., CFB. But we are seeing that unfold before our eyes. What evolves on the other side is TBD.

No, it’s not. It’s anarchy. They’re destroying the sport and traditions we love.

That is all.

What's the penalty for coaches doing the same?
A buyout from the other team or coach. Which could turn out to be a huge penalty

It's just a year at a time. What's the big deal?

The portal and uncontrolled NIL money have ruined sports. There should be caps on NIL money and transfers should have to sit out a year unless your team’s coach left or was fired. It would make these kids think seriously about where they sign coming out of high school instead of basically holding an auction for them.

I would vote no to that as it currently stands. I do like the idea but the lack of control is being abused and needs to be addressed. It reminds me of spoiled kids that get what ever they want from parents that don5 parent (no control).

If you think the slow death of college football is a good thing.

We are getting 3 star players out of the porthole. ESPN hypes it up like it is a good thing. If it was that good, Nuss would be in it along with Perkins anfd Durham. It's very disruptive and its the reason we are not prepared in our opening game. You can't train a whole team in 6 months. It takes a couple of years to get a player up to speed. You get them up to speed then 15 to 20 leave. Then you have a new set of 6 month players and you start the whole cycle over again. BTW that new set of 6 month players cost you about $15 to 20 mil. You will have to shell that out every year. It's unsustainable.

Its going to destroy the game.
The "haves" are already taking good, or great, players from middle of the road teams.
Can Arkansas, Ms State, compete?

The current environment in college athletics is definitely concerning in regards to the student athlete.

The reason we were short handed for that 2021 bowl game was BECAUSE of the portal.
Also, players stuck on the bench behind other players could always transfer. There were just ramifications and players had to be careful and seriously consider where to play... Now players can just go to the highest bidder and then move along later. It hurts the sport. Fans are losing interest.
Keeping the transfer portal is fine but there need to be consequences for transferring. Possibly , if a player transfers more than once, he'll need to sit out a year. Also, possibly a player must commit to his first school a minimum of 2 seasons. These rules should return some stability to the game.

There are consequences for transferring. Relocation...lost scholastic credits.....getting used to new teammates, coaches and systems. But sometimes it needs to be done. Playing college football is a job, it has been for years....decades. So just like people leave jobs players transfer. For schools you win some...you loose some...
