I agree. Old format was a lot more fun.
1990, i.e.,
1. LSU
2. USC
3. Georgia Tech
4. Houston
5. Southern Miss
6. USL
^where as today, we'd be playing 2.Houston, 3.USM, and 4.USL/bad in-state team in a regional and awaiting the winner of the Pasadena regional.

And expansion and money are definite reasons as most of you have already said.
Also, no more LSU will host as a 3 seed b/c Cal-State sucks at fund-raising. Back in the day of the 6-team, you never went as far west as Wichita to host...no further north than Chapel Hill. If your stadium did not have at least 3,000 seats, you sucked at life.

The "new" (well 14 years old now) format is much better for the game. Although I have a soft spot for the old style of the new format they got rid of in 2005. There were 3 games on Saturday and 2 (championship and if necessary) on Sunday.

I liked the old format better as well. Could spend all day at the Box watching baseball and see a lot of teams you had never seen before. It became who had the most pitching in the end however and led to games like LSU vs. Georgia Tech where we scored a ridciulous amount of runs in a single inning when they ran out of pitchers.

Aah, yes, the 1990 regional. We played three one run games with USC. One of the best sporting events ever, edge of your seat stuff. Brett Boone played for USC... Bob Boone, all-star catcher for the Phillies, sat behind us. Tigers beat'em in game three to advance to Omaha.

That's partially correct. It was about expanding the field and the sport in general, but the NCAA DOES make money off of this and definitely made more by changing the format and adding the Super Regionals.
There aren't a lot of PROGRAMS that make money on baseball, but the NCAA does. The hosts have to bid and Skip used to say that LSU did well to break even when hosting, but the NCAA get's their money.

I believe next season will be the last under the current format. Moving to 32 teams hosting 1st round regionals.

I hate that idea. Then you have 4 team super regionals right? What needs to happen is 3 rounds of 3 game series. That's postseason baseball.

The new format is OK, but I preferred the old one. It just seemed more exciting for some reason.

I just hated the if game thing how the winner of 1-6 plays loser 3-4 but if there's 5 teams left x happens and 4 teams y happens
Then same thing where you had to play winner bracket team if you lost the late Saturday game.
The CWS that way was crazy also but they had the one armed ump back then also.
