it was great as a responsibility free kid and getting to the box at like 9am and watching 3 games a day till 10-11 for several days

what sucked was when it was general admission, having to leave one game early to get in line to get into the next one

those were confusing as hell...

plus not every conference was represented. the SWAC might have had to play in a play-in game against the Southland for example, the Ivy League against the NEC...

the four teamers are much easier to follow. they were even better when you had three games Saturday and possibly two on Championship Sunday

USC in 94, fricking Jacque Jones

I believe Jose Cruz was in that one as well. The old format was great, but as others have mentioned, you had to use up a LOT of pitching, there always seemed to be rain delays at some point during the regional, and it was hot as balls. But, hey! We got all of that in one game yesterday!

and, yes, I know that it was Jose Cruz, Jr., but the kid yesterday was just "Jose Cruz", so I left off the Jr.

6 team regionals were much better, the best overall team usually won, not the team with a couple of good pitchers. It was much harder to advance than today when a host gets 2 cupcakes and a half arse team.

You had to have a full stable back then, not just 1 or 2 horses. The new format has eased that requirement immensely along with the new bats. Second tier programs like Ole Miss now have a chance at Omaha...oh wait.

Lot of fail in this thread. The tourney field expanded to 64 so that's why they took away the 6 team regionals. Not sure how it was about money since nobody makes money off of baseball. It's not like we have some giant tv contract. They just wanted to expand the field.

The NCAA has fricked up college baseball in more ways than one.

It's always about money. Their decision to expand the field and expand the number of regionals has opened up more areas of the country to hosting NCAA baseball tourney events and given more opportunities for the sport to be on TV.

They've streamlined the playoff system to make it more TV friendly, basically. And added the potential for many more markets.

Now, just because very few places make money off baseball now that doesn't mean that the NCAA was not using a little forsight and getting everything set up in such a way to start making money over time.

Agree. NCAA continues to find ways to screw up good things (just like the bowls).

Are you people saying that expanding the field from 48 to 64, streamlining the tournament, adding host sites, and adding super regionals has screwed up college baseball?

Because all of those look like good things to me. Sorry you can't watch three games on Saturday anymore.

I get all that. Opening up the sport is definitely better for everybody over time. But it's a gradual thing not some instant money grab.

Definitely. And it's still got a ways to go. But ESPN's coverage this year is definitely helping further it along. As will the SEC network.

Rain delays at LSU were certainly a problem with the bigger fields. I remember one year was so bad at the old AB that they called in an Acadian Ambulance helicopter to help. Push water out of the outfield.

I have to agree. The 6-team regionals were wild fun, but the last day was just who had pitching still standing. As most of the regular season is based off of a three-man rotation playing each weekend, I think the new format is a more honest representation of the regular season strength.

I miss the 6-team craziness and the truly wild second days, but the new format is better. And I love Super Regionals. Three letters: UCI.

Not me, I liked those 18 run innings.
