It’s been over

It’s better for both the players & the universities this way

It doesn't help when they don't start a bowl game when they are the only starter available.

Seems like if a QB doesn't see a path to starter by year 2 he's off to the portal.

This is way overstated.

There were 6 five-Star QBs in the 2021 class and only 2 of them transferred. Ironically, 1 of the 2 that transferred was already starting. The other would have been behind a RS SO Heisman finalist if he had stayed.

Of the 4 who stayed, none were starters going into this year and only 1 became a starter after the season began. Keep in mind these are all top 30 overall recruits.

Will some of the remaining guys transfer after this season? Maybe. It depends on each player’s situation. But this idea that most highly-rated QBs nowadays are bailing unless they can start year 2 is more perception than reality.

I would say most highly-rated FR/SO QB transfers are either because of coaching changes / toxic atmosphere or because the player feels they are stuck behind someone with multiple years remaining.

ETA: I would agree that the era of QBs waiting until their RS JR year to start is over.

Walker Howard is not leaving LSU. I would put serious money on it. It was a wish of his late mother to see him go to and play for LSU. He has said on many occasions, that he went to LSU to honor his mom. It was her wish and he's going to honor that. If anyone knows this story and how close he was to his mom will agree.

We just had the greatest season in history with a fifth year QB. The very net year Bama went undefeated with Mac Jones. Where do you people come from?

If you’re on the roster you’re in the battle.

I don’t want him gone at all. I like him. I was really just using him as an example based on his age and situation.

And regarding the G5 comment, it’s unfortunately a fact that these players have limited time and a ticking clock.

Unless you are elite, you can’t afford to transfer into a very competitive situation. There are plenty of examples of this, such as TJ Finley. And you only get 1 free transfer.

There is nothing wrong with the G5. I think it’s smart to go where you can possibly be guaranteed to start at your transfer school.

I like Nuss. I think he could be a starter somewhere.

Matt Flynn was a one school, 5th yr senior who wasn't a starter until his last year (save the '05 bowl).

Joe was a transfer. McCorkle left after his junior season. Not the same as Matt.

Yes, I can recall one year USC had nine 5-star WRs on their roster. Hell, there was one year when we had five RBs that all eventually played (some) in the NFL. It just struck me that Alfred blue was legit #5 on our depth chart and was a feature back for the Texans for a few years. Just thinking you see that now it will be “tryouts” and everyone lower than 3rd on chart after spring practice will transfer out. I think traditional recruiting is over. Now our 3-stars who get good will be portal risks to leave

Nuss sitting out the bowl last year pretty much ended his chances here.

We fixing to loose Nuss for sure and maybe Howard if Daniels returns

Not sure why people are downvoting this statement. What you are saying is straight up fact! Daniels is the kind of quarterback that can hurt your roster in a lot of ways. Is he a good quarterback, yes. is he a championship quarterback, absolutely not. He could cause players to transfer or recruits to look somewhere else.

Walker Howard needs to get to playing asap. The JD experiment has mixed results.

Howard isn't transferring, it's one more year to add things and make sure he's ready in 24. Now if he isn't the guy in 24, he's definitely on his way out!

Not how that works. You get ONE consequence free transfer. If Howard were to leave (I don’t think he does) he’d be eligible to play immediately the next season.

If he were to transfer again, then he would have to sit and wait and lose a year of eligibility.

You can’t school hop and play every year.
