Our MLB is just 1 of many underperforming defensive players.
It starts with the line. They have not been consistent or created much push most of the year. And they've left huge running lanes.
Yes our MLB has been bad. But, it's his first year starting. What's more concerning is just how bad LB (a sr) has played. And outside of KW making some good and bad plays there is no depth. Or it hasn't shown up. LL makes a play here and there but for the most part doesn't look much better than Welter.
Safeties haven't faired much better. Loston has disappointed. Not that he's been terrible, but this is a Sr preseason All SEC guy who hasn't come close to that. RM has been plain bad most the season.
Corners, I know Mills takes heat and has struggled. But, I think alot of that has to do with all the other factors. Better up front pressure and better back end help, probably better Mills.
I do see some hope. White and Robinson look good considering the lack of help. C.Thompson looks good in spots. Beckwith looks good in limited play. Lacoutre looks to have a future as does Hunter.
As for the coaching, Chavis has forgot more about football than I know. But, it does stump me seeing 31 keep trotting on the field only to get blown up or trailing a play by 5 yds. And the fact that NONE of the young DL outside of Lacoutre can't find the field scares the crap out of me.

t's time to bring some serious heat towards the line of thinking on our defense. The decisions made absolutely baffle me.
It has been painfully obvious in years past that welter wasn't exactly a prototype MLB. I don't think Lamar Louis is the answer either.
Instead of putting Beckwith out there early in the season, we moved him to de. In every game he has had very limited snaps at that position, yet has been highly productive.
The breaking point for me was the Bama game obviously. They attacked welter. They isolated te's on him, they isolated cooper on him, and they ran straight at him. A high percentage of their plays were designed to attack welter.
Meanwhile, Beckwith is blowing up the Bama players on special teams all game long. I'd have to think he would be doing the same thing at MLB if he had been playin it all season.
And rashard Robinson should be starting over mills. Mills looks lost out there, and Reid protected him last year.
Robinson and Beckwith get ticky tack fouls and get benched.
Chavis is our lb guru right? It's time to majorly question his evaluation skills at this point IMO.

I think it starts with the D-line. A bad D-line will make Ray Lewis look bad.
so that would mean a bad DL makes welter look like an 11 year old girl?

none of the DTs has. Bower's in the 2 deep at DE, and Neal has played. I think the DTs besides Lacouture needed a year to get Moffitized. not ideal for our current lack of depth, but not necessarily the worst thing in the world. Brockers and Logan needed to redshirt, and they turned out fine (though in both their cases, they didn't really play until they were RS Sophs, a couple of these guys are gonna have to step in next yr).

Chavis' critics here are sissy internet geeks who never played football but know more than one of the best DC in the country. This board is the only place they are not ignored or laughed at when they discuss football. Love to hear them join Chavis on a panel discussing football
Nice attempt at a troll there Bern.. JC is an adequate DC but lets not get carried away. There's a reason he's not at UT anymore, and until we stop the "3rd and Chavis" stuff and put somebody else at Mike, people are going to continue to chirp!

Beckwith should be at LB, WHEN YOU LOOK AT BAMA'S lb's the small one is 238lb's the other two go around 245 guess what that how you stop the run not with LBERS THAT WEIGHT 210

Problem is Chavis went small. He wants small, fast LBers and small DE's. He's traded size and strength for small and fast.
The problem that Satan is able to get and play BIG and FAST.

yeah, it's called Lane Kiffin wanted his own people in there. it's uncommon for a new coach not to bring his own ppl with him.

Even if we do have our share, most of them were over rated in high school.
Our coaches are tasked with evaluating this overrated talent when they are in HS.

These are 4 and 5 star rated players.
Yet, they are "overrated"
Maybe it's the coaches who aren't coaching them up well enough?

I've pointed at welter as a weakness since spring. I figured Beckwith would take a few games to start playing.
Nope, we move our two talented frosh mlbs to other positions and let welter get abused all season long.
Chavis and his personnel decisions are to blame. Chavis and his player evaluations are to blame.
Plain and simple

And were does DJ fit into this??
He is small and slow.
AND OUR starter
Im confident in saying that there are many HS players in this nation that could put on simular performances as him.
Oh but he lines up our constantly confused defense. So there is that.
BTW he redshirted too. So he will be a 5th year SR next year. Does he really look like a 4th year player?

No, I think you have to qualify such a statement with the fact that we have suffered two straight seasons of an unusual amount of early defections.
When that happens, it's impossible to have SEC ready players to step in. Just too much pressure on each class of recruits. I'm willing to cut some serious slack in evaluating the mess we see out there.
I just can't wrap my head around how we settled at the Mike position, when it's just so glaring. And when our Mike stays on the field in coverage 25-30 yards down the field, it calls into question everything that's going on.
I'll say it again, I think Chavis is retiring at the end of the season. Only thing I can come up with.

If he was such hot shite then why would there have been a need or a "want" for that matter to replace him?? Not every new coach that comes in cleans house. Jus sayin.....and for the record, I never said the guy was Malveto.

In all seriousness I simply do not believe that DJ Welter starts for ULL. So he isnt Conference USA ready.. SO WTF is he doing starting EVERY game and in on nearly EVERY play for LSU?
If he is the best you have got that has nothing to do with defections. That has to do with PISS frickING POOR player evaluations. Either currently among available MLB or through recruiting.
If its an issue of not having experience why are we giving that experience to a slow unathletic and small player with only 1 year left next year instead of faster players with more potential that could be here for 4 more years?
