Team SEC Mentality
Posted by whiteyc777 on 12/23/09 at 2:02 pm00
Help me understand the "Team SEC" mentality that seems to run rampant amongst the fanbases of SEC teams. What does LSU gain by Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss winning their bowl games?
I hate every freaking team in the Big Televen outside of Penn State. As far as I'm concerned, they can all contract herpegonhasyphillaids.
So, why root for your rivals in any situation?

No playoff system. Perceived strength of conference is huge when it comes to the polls.
It can put you into the national title game.

It helps when you have a year like LSU did in 2007, they had plenty two loss teams so strongest conference team goes in, plus with this perceived SEC whether real or not usually the champion of the SEC goes to national championship, stonger conference = stronger TV deals like the one with ESPN, more money for every university.

I'm throwing the BS flag.
No conference has been more disrespected lately/embarrassed on the national stage than the Big Televen.
Ohio State seems to have no difficulty in overcoming that "perceived strength of conference".

Traditional powers like tOSU who bring TV ratings and casual fan interest get benefit of the doubt, but other than that it goes to conference.

yet they continue to show up at big bowl games and get buttfricked on national TV over and over...

1. Stop "signing" your posts. Your name appears next to what you type, so we know it's you.
2. When is the last time the Big11 got two teams in BCS bowls in the same year?

Im not really sure what point he was trying to make. He would have a point if OSU was getting into BCS bowls based on the polls instead of tie ins

What's ironic is the fact it was the Big-10's lack of strength which allowed OSU to get into the NCG two years ago, because they only had one loss. If they would have had two that same year, there is no way they get in over USC or other two loss teams.

You would first have to understand being in a REAL conference, a real conference in the day & age of the BCS & pre-season polls basically "setting up" the way the media wants/hopes the season plays out. If you don't think having your opponents from your conference going in & beating other conferences top teams doesn't bode well for your team, then you don't understand, & probably never will. When the SEC, as a whole, comes in with 8 teams in bowl games, 2 in BCS bowls, & can come out with a dominating W/L record, then the SEC as a whole, gets props for going head to head with other conferences & getting W's. From there, RESPECT for the conference grows & keeps growing into the offseason, the pre-season, TV deals, & right smack dab into the real season. Most other conferences don't worry about things like that because, outside of the 2 or 3 top teams, the rest of the conference is weak & really doesn't play into the national picture, can't say that for the top 6 teams in the SEC. Sooooo....GEAUX SEC!!!

I think it has a lot to do with the lack of major media markets. With only historically (pre-1990's) regional coverage, if your name wasn't Alabama you didn't get the national recognition.
Also, our part of the country gets dumped on by the rest as a bunch of ignorant, hillbilly, country bumpkins. I think you see a little pride in the South and our college football.
I also agree that with the current system, it's in our best interest for the conference to have a good perception.
I think it's worked. There's no doubt we're getting the respect now. In fact, we're probably already starting to see the backlash.

Hmm ... you're right. Good for them. Hope they both get their screen doors blown off.

They've done it practically every year since the BCS started.
2004 was the last time they didn't. It's only happened 3 times since the BCS started in 1998.

We pull for these teams all through the year OOC, and our favorites against other SEC teams. We also want the SEC West to be the most powerful side of our conference. Always pull for the west against east, and always pull for SEC against OOC. These are the teams we follow with a passion. We know about their recruits, we know about progress of players, we watch the changes in coaching staffs. It's the league we pay attention to, so we genuinely care about them more than anyone else.
This is why I think the BCS is BS. Football is a regional sport and no matter how much ESPN tries to make it otherwise, can you really care about teams from so far away? I don't know 10 players in the Big 10, so IDGAF about the games outside of their historical matchups. I know Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Bama's teams by heart. ANd pretty much all of their players who entered the league recently. I pull for them too, kind of like they were part of our lives. They were.
SEC IS football to us. The game in Atlanta every year IS the prize. I wish all the conference winners played on Jan 1st in bowl tie ins and that was it.

Nah...they got two this year through a technicality really. the SEC was really the only conference this year with a great 2nd place team. The BCS bowls were kinda fighting for scraps for their at-large invites this year. Seriously. Boise State, TCU, Iowa?
