You obviously don't get the concept of "making YOUR OWN TEAM look better" then....!?

Its a pretty logical answer and one easy to understand.

Whoever had the line about "living vicariously through others when your teams sucks" hit the nail on the head.
Doubt it. Id argue that more pretend to root for the teams so that when they win, they can pretend to be happy when confronted by the opposing SEC fanbase. That way they dont have to hear them talk shite or be all pissed off.

you know how yall actually have a winning record against the SEC in bowl games?
well there is a reason penn state posters have to keep bringing this up. its because your conference sucks.

No, I get it. I just fail to see that whatever positive benefit that could be gained by your team looking slightly better isn't negated by your yearly opponents making themselves better.

LSU 2007 LSU 2007 LSU 2007 LSU 2007 LSU 2007
how many times until you get it?
As a different example consider Auburn 2004 before the SEC has this respect.
As for recruiting, it shouldnt really be an issue unless you completely suck. There are only so many players allowed on one team. Its not like every single recruit can go to alabama. Plus the impact of your conference being known as the best throughout the country makes up for it.
Besides, even if you lose your bowl game, how much of an impact does that really have vs. winning your conference. Bama is already the best in the SEC so its not like beating texas elevates them to a higher position in the SEC.
However if a conference wins all their bowl games it gives a much larger increase in rep to the entire conference.
Fwiw its pretty nice as an SEC fan to have the media sucking your dick.

Its like being apart of a super elite group. our tradition runs very very deep. Even though the SEC is thought of as just a football conference we excel in other areas.
Kentucky = college basketball
LSU = bball - Pete Maravich - greatest college basketball player ever.
LSU/MS State = baseball
LSU/Arkansas = track & field tradition.
Tenessee = womans bball
Georgia = gymnastics
vandy = nerding

All it would have taken is for West Virginia or Mizzou to win, and all that conference pride crap would be for naught.

Then you need to waltz on over to the ESPN board and read some of the posts...the perception that an SEC team will have the benefit of the doubt (should it be needed) is not just a myth. It ultimately helps all the SEC teams. Take, for example, the Ole Miss/Texas Tech bowl game from last year. When they blew out that "high powered Big 12 offense"....Florida's loss to them didn't look so bad b/c it was realized how tough our conference really is. Add to that fact the convincing win that UF had over OU and then you see how overated the Big 12 truly was. How does this help LSU?...we lost to UF & Ole Miss (those loses look more justified IMO). Should there be questions about the next few years, the SEC teams will get the benefit of the doubt (including MY TEAM...LSU). It helps ALL of our teams, maybe not this year, but down the line. I like those odds!

You're missing the point. Of course a two loss LSU wouldn't have gotten in over a one loss West Virginia or Missouri. But because those two lost there was a big group of two loss teams and only one could be taken to play a one loss Ohio State. LSU was #5 and #7 in the polls, was chosen by the voters as the perceived strongest two loss team because of the SEC, and jumped all the way up to #2.

That's the whole point. WVU and Mizzou screwed up...leaving a huge mess with numerous 2 loss teams vying for a spot in the NCG. Why do you think LSU got in? Two things: 1. conference strength & 2. annihilating VT at the beginning of the season
Fast forward to the NCG where LSU easily beat OSU and now the Big 10 is looked at as a joke. Isn't your team in the Big 10? How can this not be a negative?

I think there is an inherent difference in "rooting" for your rival or just wanting them to win to make your own team look better. I, personally (as I've stated), like most SEC teams and will root for them. But when some of them screw up, I then have the option of laughing at them (i.e. Bama last year)...it is a win-win situation for a fan of a team in the SEC.

I think what it will take for you to understand is the day when Penn St. and another SEC school finish with one loss and the SEC school gets the nod over Penn St. in the NC game. Then when all the St. fans start bitching, we will bring this thread back from the dead and you will say "Oh that's why".
