.. but in their prime, Coach John Wooden or Phil Jackson or Coach K could not have put together a winning, top tier SEC team in year one under the circumstances Matt McMahon inherited.

Tiger fans want a top tier, championship caliber program...
- develope reasonable patience
- support the program by fan attendance and positive, winning attitudes

LSU has that intimidating fan support with baseball and football. We shouldn't expect a championship basketball program without the same fanatical support those programs receive from Tiger die-hards!

And yes, I attend a few games a year for each sport. If I were younger and lived closer I'd be there to support the teams all the time.

Point of the post ... Matt McMahon knows how to coach the game successfully, give him his due time and support to prove it.

But they want INSTANT gratification!
And they want it now!
And if WW had to lie and cheat to give it to us, they were down with it.
You know..
Because he's a gangsta and such...

None of them did. Coach K was on the brink of being fired after three years. Then he signed Johnny Dawkins. Dawkins saved his career.

you don’t think if coach K was hired instead of McMahon LSU wouldn’t have gotten high caliber recruits and transfers immediately?

Well which is it winning or top tier? All of those guys would definitely have this group in contention and likely qualifying for the NCAA tourney. McMahon has several issues but the most glaring is his personnel decisions. Juice Hill should not be playing much less starting, Cam Hayes is out of position, Jalen Reed and Juice Williams are bottom rotation guys not first couple off the bench type players. Ward and Wilkinson before him should’ve been getting time all year so should Phillips. Aside from his antiquated style and inability to adjust during games you can’t win no matter who’s on your roster if you have the worst 3 guys eating up tons of minutes. There’s plenty of talent to beat the ATMs and Floridas of the world yet we’re not even competitive vs those teams. That’s not a talent issue that’s a coach who’s being totally overmatched.

Brian Kelly says hello. Inherited a true disaster. Under the current portal situation, basketball is easier than football. Wooden, Jackson or Coach K didn’t have this Wild West portal. Try another excuse, very weak.

Exactly, Woodward needed to flash some money and get a bigger name coach.

None of those are Larry Brown…the GOAT at turning programs/franchises around. The guy just hated to stay at one place for very long.

Lol no. With the transfer portal top tier talent would follow those coaches anywhere

I don’t think anyone is saying we should have been a top level team this year but his recruiting has been pretty weak so far. He better hammer the portal with more than just some Murray State guys

The scenario you present and we are in is a MOUNTAIN for coach McMahon to overcome. Nobody disputes this.

The problem we have is that we should have laughed in the face of the NCAA just like KU and UNC did/are doing. We are a powerful enough brand and football program to tell the weak assed, hanging by a motherfLucking thread NCAA to go scratch their arse. Especially when EVERY OTHER MOTHERFLUCKING SCHOOL pays these top players under the table, and for the most part, crickets from the media. Hypocrisy at it's finest. And WE SHOULDN'T HAVE BENT OVER AND TAKEN IT.

Back to Kansas. I don't know this for a fact, but I do know this (it's common sense). KU got together with the NCAA and worked out an arrangement where the NCAA backs the fLuck off of them, but allows the NCAA to have the "appearance" of policing the Jayhawks, resulting in a slap on the wrist and Bill Self staying right the fLuck where he's at. There are 2-3 scenarios why Woody refused to stand behind the best coach LSU has had since Dale, and probably could ever get. My money is on doing his in law Emmert a solid, and allowing him to save face by saying "we made LSU get rid of Wade."

Now that is a reasoned and intelligent response.

Congratulations on finally reaching your teen age years.

It no longer takes several years to build a roster. McMahon has no excuse starting next season. Judging from the state of next years recruiting class it’s not looking good. We’ll see. This “he needs 3 years before being any judgement” is ridiculous.

It’s funny how some think MM should have just waved a magic wand and the talent would have flocked to LSU. Where I disagree a little with you is in the fact that the portal being in place now would allow those coaches to bring their talent with them. Let’s face it, none of those coaches would have left the upper echelon programs to coach LSU’s MBB team, they aren’t considered an top tier program and wasn’t an elite program even when WW was here. The women’s program wasn’t considered elite and got a legend to come but only because of circumstances for her, was it a good move to make. I don’t see a ton of talent on the team as of now, the only guys who matched up talent wise yesterday was KJ and Miller. The rest of those guys are bench players.

The “muh no talent” excuse is false. We have more top 100 recruits than all but 4 or 5 SEC schools, 2 of which have already blown us out. We have an all-conf level big who wasn’t a top 100 guy and is a 5th year Sr. We have 6 other veteran players who’ve played and contributed for winning teams and he has two 4* and a 5* freshman. You can’t excuse all of that by claiming there’s just no talent on this team especially when other coaches are doing much better with less.

Will do Matt. Please remember though it’s just basketball. The vast majority aren’t interested until March.

This is a BS argument. In the portal /NIL era, turning over most of a roster is no longer an excuse.

Plus, this team has talent. This team has more guys with significant NCAA tournament experience and NCAA tournament wins than most rosters in the SEC.

The Woodward boot lickers continue to try to move the goalpost. In May, it was look how awesome MM did in putting together a real good roster.

Now that his really good roster with tons of high level college basketball experience is not competitive in the SEC, it is “he was in an impossible situation.”

We are 1-4 because of coaching and performance, not because of a disparity in talent.

ETA. Just from the outside looking in, he’s got to be close to losing the locker room. He can’t blame that on hold over players, as you’ve pointed out, he doesn’t have many of those.

Do your eyes tell you that each of these players has been evaluated accurately?
Is Miller who you thought he was? Juice Hill?
At this point, do your eyes tell you that this team has 5 legit starters capable of Average SEC performance?
Do your eyes tell you that Ward, Phillips, and Reid play like Top 100 Recruits?
Other than KJ, my eyes haven't seen many consistently average performances - let alone the kind of individual flashes of god given athleticism you associate with above average talent.
I love em' all because they're Tigers but our talent level is below average.
