I think the truth is always somewhere in the middle. In hindsight our defense wasn’t exactly “good” last year, but you do have to account for the roster.

At the same time, those transfers last year were not scrubs by any means. Foucha, Brooks, and Wingo were already SEC starters. Bernard-Converse was first team all-Big 12. Mekhi Williams-Garner was the only G5 flyer of the bunch and turned out to be a good player. So was our defense really hampered by the roster?

To me the biggest head scratchers this year are Chestnut and Harris. Both of those guys should be solid CBs on paper. I’m less concerned about the LB group’s performance because I think Speights’ injury has hurt that entire unit. But our secondary, while lacking depth, shouldn’t be that bad.

At a minimum I think you have to look at Cooks and Steeples this off-season. As of right now I’d say House as well, unless we see a real turnaround from here on out - and I don’t mean to a “less bad” defense.

He's fine. Doesn't have the talent this year in the secondary to be better.

Technique on the d line is lacking.

Who do you blame the bad techniques that the linebackers are playing with

The position coaches are trash. Steeples should not be on staff next year

Well if you just watch the game Saturday you’ll see Smith was lined up as a 3 or 5 tech a lot when before he was always on the nose. If you listen to Jenkins interview with Mascona on May 9th you’ll hear him talk about Smith and Wingo specifically with Smith as the 3 and Wingo as the nose which is what they worked on all off season. That was completely changed until this week. So do we know for sure who made the decision, no but the evidence points in one direction only.

I dont see any adjustments, I feel like we’re running zone and 90% of the time we look like we have no idea. I said during the game our DBs play like they’re only thought is to get to the center of their little madden circle and react to the catch.

So everyone can defend it by saying “we don’t have the players for Man” but obviously we don’t have the players for zone either. We have at least a chance of knowing our assignments in man

First, thanks for asking the question and getting some thoughtful input from others rather than mid game rants.
I think the lack of a down hill LB tackler, like D White is why he went after Speights. One problem is even when healthy Omar is a PAC 12 LB who isn’t a physical presence. If you look at other SEC defenses that excel you’ll almost always find a guy in the middle that keeps the interior in check, can fight off OL blocks and sets the tone.

He's the defensive coordinator and the defense sucks.

For an NFL linebacker coach, we have a true freshman that is performing better than everyone else.

We have a legit 215lb playmaker that he wants to take on 330lb offensive tackles all game(although he finally made that adjustment).

It just doesnt make sense.

He’s being scapegoated due to poor talent. His defense needs 3 safeties and they have none. CBs are well below lsu standards.

DL is one of the few specialty positions that really needs their own coach. The revolving door there has not been good for that unit.

My opinion is that a good DC would have at least a middle tier defense with the talent we have. It is not a fair expectation for them to be a "good" defense with a lack of CBs and true pass rushers.

But the current performance? This defense is the worst defense in the Power 5. No one on this board would seriously argue that we have less talent on D than every school in the Power 5. They are massively underperforming. House should go.

Its mainly scheme. We lack coaching at DB and it shows.

The issue with scheme, is Kelly dictating what he wants played? From the post game Mizz press conference Kelly said he wanted rush 4 this game and rushing anymore would be unfavorable matchups.

I'm deeply concerned with the scheme playing 15 yards off the WR and getting very little pash rush.

We need to bring in a top DC that would be a hit with recruits to help that end as we are getting hammered in recruiting. Top DL coach and top DB coach needed as well.

To my old eyes it seems to be everywhere. Bad play that is. I can't imagine that many bad players so perhaps collectively its just too many sub par defensive coaches just not coaching these guys up.

I need to see a hot board of who would be available.

Or is it possible that he really is just playing with young recruits / less-talented transfers and could turn it around as he gets more of "his guys"?

I don't know why they wouldn't play all the freshman DB's at this point. It can't get any worse.

But it's hard to ignore that he did a pretty good job last year with a roster put together with duct tape.

Sure, but he had NFL roster talent at every level of the defense, yet still had a defense in the 40s and gave up 30 + in half of our big games. We should have higher standards than that.

Soft zone that they run is terrible. People were happy with the hire because he wasn't Bo Pelini or Daronte Jones.

I think it's being shown that was a factor of having great leadership and veteran players, because this year's defense came into the season completely unprepared and lost.

BJ Ojulari, Harold Perkins, Jay Ward, and two highly experienced and hungry corners covered up most all deficiencies in coaching last year.

It’s bad, he needs to go. 2 picks saved us in what should have been our 3rd loss. (Without JD playing his arse off) Not sure you can even defend it at this point.

It’s not even JUST the secondary. How many QB pressures, sacks, TFL do we have?
