He had a lead. First move is towards home on contact. The ball just so happened to be hit down the line. Honestly not slit you can really do besides get caught up in a rundown and hope for an error

At this point you bunt until you get run. It's the only way to assure the ball is in play in a spot that has some chance at scoring a run
