Team has a major problem in making contact with the ball. In the last two games out of 54 outs made by LSU there were 35 strike outs (65%.) This means the defense has no chance to drop a popup, boot a ground ball, lose a ball in the sun etc. By striking out you have no chance of sacrifice flies or a scoring by fielders choice. There is simply no pressure on the defense. Take a look at the SEC strikeout stats of Jones, Dugas, Thompson and Jobert to see the main problem area. We will not be succesful if we don't do a better job of "moving the ball."

We have really taken some strange at bats lately.
Lots of first pitch fastballs that we don’t offer at.

Is there any chance Jay is forcing some hitters to go after the breaking balls right now?

Lsu struck out 24% of the time per at bat, thats 6th out of 14 in the sec.

Teams that finished worse than them:
Georgia
Kentucky
Auburn
Tennessee
Arkansas
South carolina
Texas am
Missouri

Florida finished 0.3% better than lsu

I understand baseball is a very difficult sport, but I don’t understand the plate approach with 2 strikes and 1 or fewer outs and a man on 3rd base. Shorten your stroke, choke up, and make contact. It looks like we are swinging for the fences every time. It’s ok just to get the runner home. A home run is not always needed.

yep,I know exactly what the problem is,our guys are looking for pitches to drive, not just hittables ,hr`s are exiting, but we would be better off with contact hitters that are a hard out like stoney brook was.

Driving a pitch is hitting it hard. Not necessarily hitting a home run.
You swing at a pitch you can drive, not just because it’s a strike. That’s how you end up with a weak arse ground ball and get turned two.

The problem the last couple games was watching the good fastball early in the count and getting in a breaking ball count.

I’m still fricking pissed off about that Dugas at bat. That’s why I want Tanks up to bat over Crews in the clutch. He has an actual two strike approach for contact. Crews wants to drive the ball or walk. He’s amazing, but Tanks is that dude in the clutch.

I think JJ needs to part ways with Wanaka and get another hitting coach.

Runners left on base is the major problem. I get so pissed when I see bases loaded and Milazzo at the plate

Jay wants his hitters to work counts and get deep at bats.

That’s great for some hitters. Guys like Crews, White, Morgan even Beloso to an extent are fine behind in the count and can put tough pitches in play.

I disagree with forcing guys like Jones, Jobert and Travinski to do it. They need to be fastball hunting whether it’s the first pitch or the 10th pitch.

Totally agree. What I’m wondering is, this tournament isn’t do or die for the season. Is Jay treating these games like scrimmages against good teams?

I have no doubt that he green lights Jones Kling and Travinski on 0 counts normally.

It is amazing how many times Dugas sits at 0-2 after taking the 1st pitch fastball right down the middle.

Do you really think some of our best power hitters have been told they can't swing at first pitch fastballs?

Where did you get the 35 strike outs number? LSU batters struck out 11 times in yesterday’s game and 17 times against Arkansas. That’s 28 times in the last two games (52% of the outs).

I do agree that’s still too high a number and the strikeouts are what killed us the last two games, especially with runners in scoring position.

Twice had a runner on third with no outs yesterday and could not bring them home.

I believe that Jay has a very public approach to hitting that discourages swinging at the first pitch. Yes.

Does LSU EVER take bunting practice? Every batter in the lineup should be able to lay down a bunt to move a runner at the very least.

I've been hard on him as well, but the guy has played really well the last few weeks...can't say the same about the others

28 strikeouts, not 35.

35 would be an NCAA record over a 2 game stretch (or very close to it).

I knew that number couldn't be right.
