The post about Art Cantrelle got me to thinking about another memorable wild former player who played in the mid-80s.
All eyes would be on Rehage on every LSU kickoff as he would fly over blockers kamikaze style and throw himself into the kickoff returner. You were waiting to see the guy break his neck. I think Rehage had to quit football because of too many concussions. He started the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans later on if I’m not mistaken.
Anyone remember watching this guy play or have any good stories about him?

Yeah! I remember him. He would race down the field, hit the opponent as hard as he could, get up staggering from the impact, with a glassy eyed smile on his face.
Anyone remember Cliff Harris, who played for the Dallas Cowboys, both played with the same reckless MO.
Neither could have played today with that style. They would be in constant concussion protocol. Theirs and someone else's.

yep, he was my favorite. My dad would make me come watch kickoff when I was a kid. He would tell me to watch this SOB!! He would literally launch himself at someone on Kickoff! Obvious inspiration behind my screen name. It's one of the things that makes LSU my passion now.

He was The prototypical Kickoff team madman. He was like a far less talented Jarvis Landry or Michael Clayton on kickoffs-but the results were the same , he would just blow people up. He had quite the cult following because of that.He is definitely on the All Time LSU Special teams team.

Special teams demon.

I also remember the guys on ESPN constantly screwing his name up (Steve RAY-Hodge).

Not in jail...D.A. dropped the rape charges.

He was a fan favorite. I got a picture with him (which I can't find) at media day in 1985. He would be thrown out of every other game for targeting if he played today.

In the entertainment biz. At one time he owned Voodoo Fest or one of those events. He was rolling for a while, not sure about recent.

I played at OBU where Cliff Harris played, some insane stories about him in school. He once threw a guy off a bridge into the Ouachita river because someone told him the guy said he was better than Cliff. He showed up at a practice with Roger Staubach one time. Really cool experience.

He had to have a special helmet made because he always led with the crown of his helmet. The guy was concussed for about 2 years straight until his equipment was adjusted. He wasn’t just a special teams guy either he was a starter and an NFL player for the Giants.
