I hope you're right...but why did his scheme yield better results the year before? The talent was definitely deficient last year.
Last season looked like more total confusion vs lack of talent. The DL looked uncoached and basically was. Steeples looked like a DB coach that was just called up from HS, which he was. House looked like a guy that did not know how to communicate to college kids which since going to the NFL.
There's still going to be growing pains but if they get past USC they should be 5-0 before Ole Miss and have a lot of games to get players comfortable. It's just hard to believe that a staff with Bo Davis (one of the best DL coaches in the game), Kevin peoples (touted as The best DE coach), Corey Raymond and Baker who has proven the ability to get a 1 season turnaround of a horrid Mizzou D can't right the ship. I'm not too knowledgeable of Olsen, but if Baker wants him on staff, that's good enough for me.

Only thing I’m believing is we’ll be better than last year on defense

Is it drinking the kool-aid to think the defense will be average? Ranked in the 40-60 range?

If we beat USC by 1 point I'll be ecstatic.

What if that’s a sign that offense isn’t that great.
Disregarding that it's practice and situational. We know the oline is great so beating them is meaningful.

If Vanderbilt returned all 11 Starters on defense and Nick Saban was coaching the defense how good would they really be?

No. If we had had that last year, we would have made the playoff.

Are you trying to say LSU's defensive players are as untalented as Vanderbilt?
Idk if you know this but, lsu sits between #4-#7 most talented rosters in the country based on recruiting and transfer rankings depending on where you look. This team has 8 5 star players, and a 70% blue chip ratio which ranks #8 in the country and is significantly higher than the 64% LSU had when it won the 2019 title. Factoring in transfer we have a 66% blue chip ratio, which is good for #6 in the country.
LSU isn't lacking talent on defense, especially when most of your highest rated recruits were on defense. LSU lacked good defensive coaching, and experienced players.

We win the title last year with the #40 defense. Washington had the #30 defensive efficiency last year and held Michigan to 34pts. You can't convince me that Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers, and Brian Thomas Jr. couldn't hang 40+ on michigan. We scored 42, 48, and 49 pts on every top 25 defense we played except Alabama. Which we scored 28 points on 8 drives (lost 3 points on a missed FG) before Jayden Daniels got injured.
