re: SQ: If Etling is that good - wouldn't the coaches have seen it in practice?

I know one players dad pretty well (defensive starter) and I asked his son if Harris was any better... he kind of laughed and said not really... sometimes he looks great and sometimes like crap... same as always.

Harris may have been better in practice, just can't handle game day pressure.

Heard of DJ Welter-Kendall Beckwith? That's how much faith I have in the Miles braintrust's player evaluation abilities.

+1
Also Miles said Etling has rapidly improved in the last 2 weeks.

I remember Spurrier said once that Danny Weurffel was one of the worst practice QB's he ever coached.

It's hard to take the faux outrage on this board serious anymore. Some of you are acting like there has never in the history of football been a situation where the coach replaces a starter and had more success with the backup.

It is absolutely irrational to act like this is some huge disaster by the coaches.

If someone tries to say that this has never happened before, there are many examples to prove you wrong.

The absolute change in the play calling in the second quarter should tell you everything you need to know about who the coaches (or at least Cam) felt was the better QB.

This is a myth. The play calling was essentially the same kind of plays that are called for Harris. The only notable difference is they moved the pocket twice to Etling's right and for whatever reason the like to roll Harris to the left.

You know exactly nothing, your opinion in this matter is shite. Up until Saturday you were all Harris and Etling needed to ride the bench. You seriously have no credibility whatsoever. You really should find other subjects to comment on.

bencoleman, I think you are wrong about the slackster. i'm defending him because most of his posts show much common sense and seem based on judgement RATHER THAN EMOTION (which is all 90% of the posters on here use).

disagree with him if you want but to say he has no credibility because he preferred BH over Etling BEFORE Saturday is bull crap. DE had a surprising coming out party.

No. I've said it before and it is the truth. Football coaches can't see the forest for the trees. The worst in all sports. We lost every game our senior year, and the same qb started and played every game while the guy who was the best sat on the bench. Everyone knew it, but the coaches. Of course they probably did not want to loose their jobs, which of course most did any waylol

Board is so fricking negative right now. Hard to read some of this stuff.

Why are people still in such a bitter mood now that Etling will start or that it took this long? It is completely plausible that Etling improved enough over the past month to put himself into a position to overtake Harris. That's what happens when players practice more and more, ideally they get better.

You are such an angry man. Up until Saturday I broke down the Wisconsin game to get beyond the stats and really look at Harris's performance. I said his actual performance didn't justify all the talk about being replaced at that point. I've done the same thing for Etling since Saturday and I've stated multiple times that Harris needed to be pulled. I've broken down Etling's performance as well and I've suggested he deserves the next start.

You have a major issue that I won't talk shite about a player. You were mad last week that I didn't shite on Harris and you're mad that I won't do it now. For whatever reason you think that supporting Harris last week = I hate Etling, which is horse shite.

I want the best QB to play and I'm going to defend any player from baseless criticism. I'm sorry that upsets your fragile psyche.

Or it could be interpreted that in the 10-14 days prior to that comment that Etling began to execute at a higher rate and demonstrating a better understanding than he had been previously.

Cam worked from the entire playbook with Etling. He didn't even consider first game jitters. Cam knew what Etling was comfortable with and capable of.

If Etling's improvement was so recent, the play calling would have been more conservative, at least for a while.

Miles gets off to QBs who hold the ball so long the pocket collapses and they can sometimes scramble out of it.

Harris probably performs better or looks better (due to the cannon for an arm) during practice when there's little to no pressure, but when the lights come on, he's like a deer in the headlights.
Etling seems to just be a gamer, a leader and most importantly, confident in himself.
Harris seems to be severely lacking in the latter. Which is probably the most important thing for a QB apart from physical attributes.
