The vast majority of folks along the I-10 corridor of Louisiana do not speak with a southern/country drawl (think MS, AL, GA, TN etc). We've got the Brooklyn/NOLA yatty accent and the more rural Cajun inflections - both of which employ soft Rs (almost Bostonian) and don't particularly draw out words.

I listened to all of Coach Kelly's introductory press conference on Wed. Out of 12, maybe 15, reporters asking questions, perhaps one or two had country drawls.

Any nuanced local sees the false narrative that the national media is choosing to perpetuate.

Im from MS. BR people think i have a major accent. I dont hear it. But Bk's fake accent is nothing. Only a yankee would think that.

True. The accents aren't remotely close.

Just listen to the AL, GA, TN, and MS idiots on the Paul Finebaum show, if you can stomach it, and you'll clearly hear the difference.

I'm from NC, and people from other regions are surprised that I'm from the South, because I don't really sound like it, so I'd probably get similar criticism. As long as he never says "Appalayshun", I'm good.

Its false, but they do not think it is. They are not intentionally lying, they just think we are all hicks and cajuns. Everything outside of new orleans is swamps and overalls to them. Louisiana may have more dialects than any other area of the country. Hell, New orleans alone has about 5

They think Kelly was inclined to speak with an accent because us ignorant southerners would be more willing to accept "one of us". Because that is what we know and are comfortable with, and we are intimidated by intelligent northerners coming and and speaking over our heads

Agree - Grew up in Slidell and Chalmette area. More Bostonian and even NY Bronx accents and influence than Southern drawls.

Media narrative is funny - Spend just a few hours in groups with Southern inflections and you'll start to use them too. I know I do...

Baton rouge has its own brand of long vowels etc.

It's noticeable when I leave and come back.

Other people can hear it in me, but never really place it as necessarily southern, and would never guess south LA first.

This - most Louisiana people south of Alexandria are not sporting a "southern/country accent". Such articles perpetuated by the outside media are simply lazy and uninformed.

So far so good. I did not notice much of an accent at all.

Have not heard him pronounce pecan, New Orleans, Lafayette, boudin, Broussard, crawfish, or andouille yet.

English is my 2nd language but while on campus I had a Cajun friend and every time he said "farty" (forty-40), I would interiorly laugh.

The only parts of South Louisiana geographically that have a southern twang/drawl is LC and the I-12 corridor. The LC is mainly due to industry bringing in outsiders mostly from East Texas. I-12 is as Deep South southern as Lower Alabama or Mississippi.

All that said, BK did not fake some accent. These people are fricking reaching for anything to talk shite about with Coach Kelly.

He was a political science major and he’s a smart guy. IMO he was very obviously trying to give his speech emotion by using techniques that you hear every politician anywhere use. It sounded awkward and didn’t really hit the mark but he didn’t sound like he was trying to sound southern at all

It’s funny that Obama, from Chicago, was able to talk with what sounded like a ridiculously southern accent when he was on a roll and no one said a word but Coach Kelly is getting crucified for doing a mild version of the same thing
