It's an absolutely meaningless ranking. That's all there is to it.

Just trying to figure out exactly what possible metrics can be being used that could come to that conclusion. Blows my mind.

Its a power rating. Not based on whats happened, or any result, but based on perceived strengths of teams. By all means get upset about it if you want

From what I've seen/heard it's all based on the likelihood of winning the rest of your games from here on out. Bama likely to only play Auburn and Oklahoma or someone similar gives them a better chance of winning out over the likes of LSU playing Texas A&M, Georgia, OSU/Clemson.

My stock response everytime someone jumps off the FPI bridge:

quote:

People...

This is not a “ranking”, it’s a predictor for FUTURE games. It takes an average team, then values all others + or - based on how well they would do against the rest of the schedule.

LSU is behind Bama because they only have Auburn left to play, where LSU has A&M, as well as UGA. Statistically, a tougher road.

This is a betting tool. Y’all need to stop getting wrapped around this axle.

Umm...LSU is ahead of Alabama too.

I’ve been all over the country this fall. The nation is lovin’ them some LSU this year.

Prediction to keep winning.

LSU has 2 games and Bama has 1
LSU plays a top 4 team and Bama doesn’t

Almost all of those ranking metrics have “parameters” installed, for example, where your maximum winning margin can only be between 7 and 32 points I.E. a 1 point win would count as a 7 point win in the algorithm, and a 72 point win would count as a 32 point win in the algorithm.

I have no fricking idea why all of them think that’s such a brilliant method to use when ranking teams, because it would mean that a team who’s won every game 100-0 would be ranked the same as a team who’s won every game 32-0. If you really dove deep into the methodology that these FPI systems use, you’d be fricking shocked at how stupid their logic is.

But it all honestly makes sense when you accept that they’re designed to place 132 teams within 5 spots of their “correct” ranking, not to place the top 5 teams exactly where they deserve to be.

You're asking the wrong question .

You need to be asking what does ESPN stand for?

ESPN is famous for creating polls and stats to promote their agendas when reality simply won’t cooperate.

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily

That is what ESPN defines their FPI polls as.
