They never changed it to UL. They are UL-Lafayette.

USL always sounded better to me. Similar to USC. The whole UL thing is ridiculous and really didn’t accomplish anything except people picking on them.

I know some that like both and I know some that hate LSU almost as much as they love ULL. Mostly my wife’s friend’s spouses. They are really happy when LSU loses to anyone.

Clearly, some are your opinion, you also categorized me an LSU hating Cajuns fan, and some are just wrong, so not all facts. Most people I know in Lafayette are LSU fans and most Cajuns fans I know are also LSU fans. I have lived in Lafayette for most of my 63 years.

I know enough about ULL to know that their fans are much, much worse. “STTDB” is nothing compared to Cajun trash talk.

My understanding is the official institutions’ name is The University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The marketing department, right after the name change, created the brand “Louisiana’s Ragin Cajuns” for their sports enterprises. There were no legally binding objections to this trademark. The lines get a little blurry sometimes when referencing the sports programs, but it’s trademarked and used by the University when referencing the schools sports enterprises. Smart play by their marketing department.

A lot of history between the 2 universities but my understanding is UL-L really wanted to be the Veterinary/Agricultural school (school’s geographical location, agrarian based economy, etc) especially since LSU had Medicine and Law.

I just wish ULM would call themselves Louisiana too because they legit have 1000% just as much of a right to the name. ULL agreed to not go by Louisiana when they changed the name and became part of the state UL system. Then they broke that promise.
