A good incoming freshman class and decent hole filling in portal

I think our pitchers will come around with another year of experience,

Skenes obviously helped them get there, but didn't even pitch in the championship series.

The portal isn’t the only problem. Make a list of everyone on the team that was here last year and let me know how many of them are better.

Players need to be developed. Pitchers need to improve year over year. Most of our returning pitchers have actually regressed.

I actually do like him, but I can't understand how you start 8-0 and turn into this. I do think he has blind spots about certain players and his coaching staff.

In what scenario does Curiel come back? He's got nothing left to prove.

With, in all honesty, a pretty bad coach.

He needs to balance it this go around. Go get damn good players out of Highschool and hit the jackpot in the portal. We have to have young talent develop and get some badass, legit players out of the portal.

Tim Corbin. Nineteen straight regionals, two CWS wins

He has a great resume, but he’s starting that slow downward trajectory now. He hasn’t won anything for a minute and their disaster regional last year and rough season this year have him continuing to trend in the wrong direction.

Only a few haven’t improved, but most of them haven’t actually regressed, either.

Improved over last year:
Schmidt
Fontenot
Benge (small sample size, but he was awful last year)

Pretty much the same:
Cowan
Guidry (as 24)
Rizy (he was this wild most of last year)
Primeaux (hard to say because he’s pitched so little)

Actually Regressed:
Evans (not terrible, but hasn’t been able to own the starter role)
Williams
Noot

Part of the issue is that only Moore has really stepped up out of the portal and freshmen pitchers. Theo and Paz are starting to come around, but others like Dathe, Plog, Ricken, Garcia and Lach have been inconsistent.

Pretty sure about 7 of the 10 have worse ERAs than before. Thats not a few.

Schmidt, Fontenot, Rizy had a better ERA than last year. And after tonight, Schmidt is only 0.59 better than last year.

Benge along with the others have a worse ERA.

While Cowan’s ERA is worse, I’d say he looks the same. His early struggles have skewed his numbers and he looks really good now.

Guidry has a really good year in 2024 with a 2.59 ERA. He’s at 6.59 right now. That’s not “pretty much the same”

Williams, Evans, and noot have all dropped off significantly.

Prmieaux is down. As you mentioned it’s been in a limited role this year. But if he’s not injured and can’t get on the field with this staff, then I don’t think you can out him in the “same” category.

Some of these are not valid comparisons. Schmidt was an up and down mid-week freshman arm last year and was a complete head case when he got innings in SEC games. This year he’s been our most reliable starter. That’s a COMPLETELY different role. He’s also proven to be a lot tougher mentally than he was as a freshman. That’s not a like for like ERA comparison.

Fontenot barely pitched last year. He’s become one of our most called on bullpen arms in SEC play, and had played even more since Moore went down. Again, using ERA alone as a measure here doesn’t make sense.

Rizy just is what he is- a pitcher with poor mechanics. He hasn’t regressed. He’s still just a guy with velo and no control.

Say what you want about Benge- he’s looked far better in his last few appearances, even giving up a bit in his one batter today, then he EVER did last year. He hardly got on the field the final 1/3 of the season because of how bad he was.

Guidry’s worst appearances of this season came because of Jay asking him to do too much. He melted down as a starter. He can’t go multiple times through an order and got hammered twice when he was left in too long. He wasn’t asked to do that in the past. He has been this year. That isn’t regression. That’s not understanding who he is and using him the wrong way.

Also- you can’t discount how much higher EVERYONE’S ERA is this season due to errors, passed balls by the catchers and not being able to turn DPs. We gave away 2 runs just today by letting base runners move up. There was at least one yesterday.

If that happens, Verge will step in. Remember, he didn't hire him, Fat Scott did.

Verge sat in the interview for Jay Johnson and mentioned it was the best interview he's been a part of.

Jay isnt going anywhere.

A big problem with the transfers this year is that we played deep into Omaha and werent able to host players. Several big name transfers in the SEC were recruited by Jay and took visits to Baton Rouge during the super regional vs West Virginia. They committed to other schools when those schools were able to show more love and bring them in on visits during the college world series.

Aiden Robbins (Texas via Seton Hall) and Landon Mack (Tennesee via Rutgers) were both highly coveted by Jay, took visits to LSU, and committed to those two schools while LSU was in Omaha.

Then you have the LSU transfers

Mikey Ryan is starting for NC state and playing infield batting .303

Ashton Larson is starting at Texas and batting .328

When LSU isnt playing in the post season Jay will reload in the transfer portal and the recruiting class that he has is loaded. If we are able to get some of the kids to school, the roster will be revamped pretty quickly.

Lets quit acting like a coach that has won 2 national championships in 4 seasons doesn't know what he's doing and settle down a bit.

Verge isn't going to run off Jay Johnson.

I understand this year has sucked for yall. However, Jay is still the best coach in D1 right now.

Name another. I will standby and listen.

Idiotic take. We basically had 3 shortstops in our starting infield. Jared Jones was a very good defensive first baseman. Our defense infield was very good to elite. Our pitching improved as the season went along. Chase improved coming off Tommy John and was great at the end of the year,
