Instead of recruiting remaining High School Players for 2022 class? With the Final signing day less than a month away i see a lot of Transfer players being offered but not many High school recruits.
Is it because he figures its to late to build relations with this kids to get them to sign in feb? Filling Holes is one thing but getting talented young players to build depth over the next 3 to 4 years i believe is more important. I realize we are depleted pretty much at every position so the transfer portal makes since but kind of alarmed at how recruiting the class of 2022 has kinda died out. Hoping we can still get 1 or 2 more 2022 studs in this class.

It's either take dudes out the portal that can immediately contribute or take chances on a bunch of fringe high school guys that may or may not pan out. In his interview at the Texas bowl he said ideally you'd build from your freshmen class, but this year they have to use the portal. He has to get a good product on the field this fall to show a proof of concept to recruits for the next class. Relax, he knows what he's doing

With the transfer portal it will turn out that signing 15 to 20 HS kids is the way to go. Too many HS kids turn out to be misses. With the transfer portal you can sweep up the Joe Burrows, Damien Lewises and other players who were late developers. Kelly is lucky to be forced into using the best strategy.

We had 39 scholarship players available for the Texas Bowl. You can't fill out a roster like that with just freshmen and expect to have a competitive football team next year, especially when you arrive a week or two before ESD.

They still have big fish out there in the 2022 class like Harold Perkins, Jacoby Matthews, Trevonte Citizen and Danny Lewis, but so many players sign in December now that it'd be difficult to make enough headway with guys to delay their signing until February.

You have players on the team currently that would likely bounce as well if you went just the freshman route. They want to play on a competitive team, and you need to hit the transfer portal hard when you're coming off a bowl game with numbers like we had. If Kelly doesn't convince Brennan to come back, Boutte and potentially Deion Smith aren't coming back. There's still a few guys mulling over their decision whether to go pro or not as well. They want guys next to them that are ready for SEC football and not some warm body that was signed just because he was a freshman.

I think Kelly is doing one hell of a job so far in recognizing what he needs next season and planning ahead

It is too late to build the relationships with a lot of hs kids. So we are just going after a few. We offered the te Lewis this week. A wr from Texas this week also. Plus going after jacoby and Citizen. Bringing in Perkins for a visit still also. Plus a couple other hs guys. But yes we will go heavy on transfers bc we need them.

I was just wondering because i havent been keeping up with recruiting this year but noticed our lack of pursuing 2022 recruits with upcoming signing day.

There have been several high school players offered this week. Perhaps you’re just not paying attention.

Also, the portal offers have more urgency because school is about to start and many are trying to enroll for spring.

Especially in the trenches, it is hard to build back with Freshman. Speed and Agility might not improve much from 18-22 but strength and power do.

An 18 yr old OL/DL is usually no match physically for a 20 yr old OL who has been in a major college strength program for a couple off-season.

Plus grabbing PROVEN guys out of the portal w/ multiple years remaining seems like a good way to go any way especially if they are eligible immediately. You want to stop the portal then put back the one yr sit out rule.

I get paid about $100K a year (I know, poor) to do what I do and I’m pretty damn good at it.

He gets paid $9M to do what he’s doing.

I think imma let him do his thing and trust it.

And even if they pan out, they may take the portal elsewhere. Let someone else take the risk and bring them after someone else pays for recruiting and development. It’s the new college football model.

Kelly has said that he wants to build via high school recruiting but right now we are short a lot of players so he is getting the full allotted transfer players he is allowed. None of the players we have gotten that are transfers are going to alter taking high school players.

I think you get one free transfer and then you have to sit a year if you transfer again. If that's true, then transfers seem more valuable than HS recruits since they won't leave at the drop of a hat.

Well by definition a kid in the portal is open to an offer of change. HS kids must be wined and dined to leave their current commitment. And all HSers are freshman.

I’m sure he is trying to keep what we had committed, Switch back some that decommitted, and maybe pickup a couple of others. But the portal is a big box store offering close out sales of merchandise with extended warranty.

There’s a 7 max limit on transfers, correct.

Yes those 2 would be extremely great close to the 2022 class.

Doesn't look like he is doing either. We need to sign 32 players and I doubt we get 25. We should have 35+ offers out by now.
