Nope. Gotta have byes involved to maintain as much regular season importance as possible.
With 8 or 16, you lose that. Home field should also be a thing until a final "super bowl" championship played at a predetermined neutral site.
If they employed the above, you would see a greatly reduced chance of what we're gonna see on this last NFL weekend, with a number of teams playing the cheerleaders instead of their starters.
College football should try to avoid scenarios like that at all costs.

I agree with most of this but I don’t think ASU was over matched. It took Texas 2
Overtimes and a blown targeting call to win.

So far, a 5, 6, and 8 seed have advanced to the semifinals of college football
Those teams were ranked #3, 4, and 6 in the final CFP rankings. They were only seeded lower because the B12 and MWC champs got 1st round byes.
So far Ohio State is the only team outside the top 4 (at #6) to advance to the semis. I enjoy the expanded playoff, but I don’t think this supports the argument for it as much as you’re suggesting.

even if they keep the automatic bids for conference champions (which makes no sense to me as it should be the best 12 teams, or better yet, 8 teams, as determined by power rankings) they need to be seeded by ranking and not by conference champions getting the first 4 seeds. Boise St, SMU, and Arizona St should have been seeded 10, 11, and 12. or better yet, not in the playoffs at all.

Teams that would have never been considered and a chance for zero conference champs in the final 4….the formula isn’t working at all.

The seeding for this year was dumb. Clearly Boise, ASU, and Ohio St were seeded incorrectly.
Exactly. The teams that have advanced so far should have been the 3, 4, and 5 seeds (perhaps Penn St at #6 behind ND).

The current playoff agreement guarantees the top 4 highest rated conference champions get the top 4 seeds and a bye. That is how Boise and ASU got byes and Ohio St and Texas did not.

You watched Ohio State finish the season against Michigan and thought “yeah they should be a top 4 team”? GTFOH

If it proves anything it proves the committee was clueless and didn't factor SOS in as they should
This is a function of the nonsense seeding requirements. The #3 and #4 seeds are around #10-12th best and should have been replaced by #5 and #6. #8 should have been no lower than #6
If the playoffs were correctly seeded we’d be looking at chalk with the exception of UO-OSU

That's part of it but SOS should still be a major factor in selecting and also seeding. You don't deserve to be rewarded by slithering out with a weak schedule and then penalize universities who have a top 5 SOS in the country.
This was already a problem in the BCS era that they tried to correct which I don't see how you start off with this system for playoffs and run into the same problem again.

And just as clearly Indiana with a SOS in the upper 60s should have been out !

And it's official...all 4 "top seeds" eliminated.

Stopped paying attention. BTW, the Texas game yesterday was a 4.5 hour broadcast.
Well you missed one of the best CFP games in years. Arguably since 2017 Georgia Oklahoma
