I thought both teams got the ball now. Or is it the game is over if the first team scores?

I'd hope so, that is only fair. Someone who watches the NFL can fill us in.

If they kick a field goal the other team gets a possession

At the very least should start them out at the 35. Out of fg range or at least a long fg. Make a team move the ball to get a fg. There’s too much advantage for the team getting the ball second and knowing what they have to do to tie/win.

As it is now , it’s too easy to score, leads to multiple overtimes, defenses get gassed, which leads to more scoring and more overtimes.

I’m on board with this

Heck no, I love college OT rules. As a fan it’s so much more exciting and fun to watch

Yep and it’s dangerous to make these kids play for 7 overtimes. When players get worn down they are susceptible to injury. Lucky there weren’t any significant injuries.

I see your point but 7 OTs is the exception, it’s normally one or two at most

I've thought for a number of years that the teams should start overtime at the 40 year line. the 25 is too damn close in my opinion.

Or go to an overtime that's a quarter long where each team gets at least one possession. If neither team scores, end the damn game in a tie. I think that's the way the NFL does it these days.

The other team is allowed to play defense and you’d have to go the whole field. Personally I had no issue with the old sudden death but you could guarantee each team a possession

NCAA current one sucks and is too easy for the Offense....

NFL OT rules sucks...

To me there needs to be a compromise of the 2 for both NCAA and NFL. Maybe give the teams the ball at midfield??

Yes, with one exception

Each team gets one possession regardless

Each OT period starts 5 yards behind start of previous period to try to eliminate 3 plays for no yards then FG.

The NFL rules are better except give the other team a chance to score regardless.

No. Absolutely not. NFL overtime boils down to whoever wins the coin flip, wins the game.

The old NFL OT rules were the best.

Sudden death. If a team drives on the first possession, they deserve it.

OT in football is bad in both college and the NFL. They should both change to an overtime system like every other sport has. Set a defined period and play it out. 8:00, 10:00, 12:00 whatever. None of this first team to score wins and none of this automatically starting in FG range stuff. Play out the extra periods for the set amount of time like basketball does and get a winner or declare a tie.
