Because we lost 7 starters on defense and the 2018 class, which is the one in its money year right now, sucks.

New coaching staff, new scheme, zero offseason, all the player losses. I mean it’s not hard to see why

Except for the attrition (which the coaches have done a poor job of retaining players) many other schools were faced with similar circumstances and each one with same covid related issues.

Player motivation that comes through in practices and then in games they kinda just give in.

You don’t regress this much in a single year without there being multiple reasons.

- Ranked 92 out of 130 in returning defensive production (by Connelly’s metric) before anyone opted out.
- Lose Shelvin, Ika, and Vincent on top of that.
- New scheme with different responsibilities from what our few returning guys have been taught under Aranda.
- Limited spring training to install new defense (although extended fall camp makes up for some of that).
- Apparent failure by the coaching staff to identify these issues during fall camp.
- A bad (comparatively speaking) 2018 class that now makes up most of our upperclassmen. Of the 10 defensive players signed in this class, 3 are no longer on the team and 2 are now playing offense. Only 3 of the remaining 5 defensive players from the 2018 class were ranked in the top 300 nationally.
- Apparent lack of player leadership to hold others accountable for fixing their mistakes.
- Very thin roster at several positions.

It’s really a perfect storm for a really bad defense. The impact of that 2018 class along with last year’s early departures and this year’s opt-outs really can’t be understated. To put it into perspective:

LSU currently has 21 defensive players that were ranked in the top 300 (247 composite) out of high school:
- 10 freshmen
- 4 sophomores
- 2 juniors
- 5 seniors

Last year, LSU had 27 defensive players who were ranked in the top 300 out of high school:
- 8 freshmen
- 6 sophomores
- 9 juniors
- 4 seniors

So if you want to use the top 300 sophomores, juniors, and seniors as a metric for experienced depth, that adds up to 11 players this year vs. 19 last year.

Isn't Pelini's defense supposed to be fairly complex? Even with a spring and summer of learning the defense, there would still be a lot of mental mistakes. This is just a perfect shitstorm of bad luck and horrible timing.

They are playing for a coach who is way past his prime and is basically a placeholder. It's a shitty situation for them.

O should have made him keep it mostly the same this year from last year. Should have been a no brainer given the lack of off season. But O wanted to see more sacks and TFLs so here we are...

At what point did we have wheels? To me it looks like we have a bike with no chain situation happening here. This D Is soft and slow

We have 5 defensive backs in the entire game and then we have a LB covering their slot receiver on 3rd and 8.

As far as coaching styles go, I'm not sure you can go more 180 than Pelini after Aranda. Aranda is intense but he teaches in a calm and intelligent manner. Pelini is not unintelligent, but he has more of an old school mentality of yelling loud and coaching hard. Completely different. The players on this roster are accustomed to the style of the guy that recruited them. Pelini's style can still work here, but it's going to take roster turnover to recruit to the 4-3 and have guys that are bought in to his way of teaching. This year ain't the year.

Maybe he doesn’t know what the frick he’s doing and the players know it.

bullshite take. Doesn’t explain the lack of effort.

Sure it does. If the players know the scheme is bad and that they are being set up for failure, why bother trying? Seems the better plan is to let the wheels fall completely off and hope the problem (Pelini) gets fired and the next guy actually has a clue.

I don’t know, but maybe it’s because Pelini has not been in the big time in awhile. Offenses are not what they used to be.

What happened to the other 5 freshman from last year that should have been sophomores this year?

Going from 9 to 4 is pretty drastic after just one year.

Tbh, I think all of this started back when the players marched without Orgeron.

Why do we keep acting like these players: most of which have little to no NFL draft stock are intentionally ruining their careers?

Because they jog around, give up on plays and quit games at the first sign of adversity. Say what you want about the lack of talent. But there is also a lack of effort and discipline.

Looks like it was actually 8 last year, not 9. We lost 4:

Marcel Brooks transferred, Apu Ika is in the transfer portal, Donte Starks was indefinitely suspended, and Ray Parker was indefinitely suspended.
