things look great for this season and hopefully beyond, still has nothing to do with Miles being "accomplished" at LSU

I’m not taking anything away from the great teams/years he did have, but looking at only positives without weighing against negatives is not a complete evaluation. That’s no different from looking at negatives without weighing them against positives.

It’s true that a lot of coaches don’t leave at a high-point, but what exactly is “Miles fatigue”?

We didn’t just inexplicably get tired of him — and he didn’t just inexplicably become ineffective or trail off on recruiting because of age gapping or motivation...

He proved to lack (at LSU) what most people believe to be the greatest predictor of managerial success: adaptability.

The reason we were all tired of him? Straight up ignoring criticism through failure-after-failure... and every single time the losses played like the same TV rerun — To the point that the LSU football brand was all but inseparable from dated, anemic offense + he will never live down some of the atrociously-bad-even-for-high-school clock management gaffes.

I swear, the guy could have stayed and run LSU football straight into middle-earth + some people would still be out here saying “but 2007 though!”

I’m not saying we should ignore anyone’s accomplishments — He’s a national championship coach. I credit him fully for 2007 and for sustenance through 2011.

I don’t credit him for facilitating the golden age of LSU football (nor should anyone else who lived through 2000-2003), but I do credit him for damn near bringing us the end of the era.

LSU is very fortunate to be in its current position in spite of Miles’ latter years — if they make the playoff this year, there’s no one nationally who wouldn’t consider it a turnaround.

Overall, Les brought me far more frustration as an LSU fan than he did joy. I’m already enjoying Orgeron more despite the slower start — simply on account of following the team no longer feels like repeatedly smashing your head into the same brick wall forever.

Miles would've won 5 if Saban stayed his arse in the NFL.
Am I playing this game right?

Disagree.

In fact, I don't think Saban wins another NC at LSU. 2005 he didn't have a shot because of USC/Texas.

I think he bolts after that season.

Saban came to LSU because of Mark Emmert. I've always thought that once Emmert left, Saban was off to another college or the NFL.

Have to agree with this. Even with all the winning seasons, watching the LSU offense during Mile's tenure was often painful.

those question look more like leading questions than thought provoking to me I mean i've never heard anyone suggest we should have hired Miles who had never been a HC yet instead of Saban or that they really wish Miles was still the coach but whatever

This.

this isn't wrong, and i agree but the 2013 offense was pretty good, sure maybe it could have been a little better, or innovative but we did lose a game that year 44-41, that's not due to anemic offense. people were quick to point out O and E set a record for most yards was an SEC team with 634 vs Missouri after they took over but we had 624 just a year before with Les and Cam against USCe. But overall the offense under Miles was not good and that became magnified after the 2012 BCS CG and subsequent games vs Alabama and his refusal to change becomes a big part of his legacy.

Ultimately though I've always agreed with what John Madden said after he retired from coaching. After 10-12 years things can get stale and its time for a change.

I don’t credit him for facilitating the golden age of LSU football

i 100% agree with this.

i think this is grossly overrated and not to sound like a broken record but also Miles Fatigue. His last full year was 9-3, not super exciting but not terrible either. Before he got fired he lost 2 games away from home on basically the last play to teams that finished that year in the top 15, hardly a "dumpster fire" but absolutely a clear case of offensive failure, namely his inability to recruit and develop a HS QB in 10 years, which is mind blowing, hell DiNardo signed 2 good ones in his first 2-3 years but anyway, the program was definitely going sideways and it was time for a change, but it was not a disaster and not anywhere close to where the program was when DiNardo or Saban was hired. LSU was in much better shape than Texas for example which had 3 straight losing seasons.

Thats on you. He had a very successful tenure overall, yes there were frustrating moments but also some damn good ones. 2011 alone was as fun a season as any and something i'll remember a lot longer than years like 2014. Its not ignoring his negatives, its just that they don't matter anymore.

I can get behind this. Have an upvote.

I only have two counterpoints:
1) We were never going to beat Bama under Saban again with a Les Miles offense
2) LSU’s conference record in Miles’ last 4 (full) seasons looked like this:
6-2
5-3
4-4
5-3

So the 9-3 year you pointed to was the third consecutive year in which they lost 3 or more SEC games, and the expectation was they were on pace to continue that trend.

The year Les got canned, LSU had squeaked out a field goal win over a MSU team that would finish 6-7/had already lost their season opener to South Alabama.

Crazy as it sounds, going into this season (as in pre-Burrow-for-Heisman in your wildest dreams) Orgeron had already matched LSU’s single best conference record since 2011...

So yea 9-3 sounds not-disastrous, but I’m still convinced Miles had only just begun circling the bowl. He was never going to be able to recruit a QB at that point + that issue was so long-standing... skill positions were next in line.

Dude are you a fricking idiot? This thread is based on comments that saban made himself about his biggest regret being leaving lsu and wishing he would have just stayed here. If he would have stayed at lsu, he definitely would have won slot more titles in his time here and God knows where we would be right now in terms of titles. The thread isn't about where you think he would have left for or what you think he would have done, it's about IF he stayed at lsu like he said he wished he would have done in the first place. Moron.

Not so sure. We backed into the won he did win. Still the only NC with 2 losses. We could have won more with Miles if would just evolved.

There really is no way of knowing.

Does 04 turn out better if he hasn't already decided to leave?

Does he do as well as Les in the wake of Katrina?

The players wouldn't be the same.

The easier scenario would be Saban not going back to Bama. LSU would have had at least two more, that we do know.

Don't listen to this guy, he thought LSU was on the level of Kansas.

Forget that LSU was ranked as high as #6 in 1998 and had won 3 straight bowl games, including one against Saban, before it started going wrong for dinardo.

And conversely, Les would have won 3-4 more if Saban never went to Bama. Or succeeded in the NFL.

What part did Miles have in winning the 2003 national title?

You don't think LSU winning a national title & sec titles has a great impact for future recruits?

Les had to compete against Saban. Without that, LSU wins more titles. Saban had it easy when he was at LSU. The SEC was down.

Other than LSU, Ole Miss was the only ranked SEC west team in 2003. Only 3 other SEC teams ranked in the top 20.

In 2004, we were preseason #4 under Saban and finished with 3 losses in a year when only 4 SEC teams were ranked. If Miles did that he would have been fired.
