re: Saban Question...Does anyone else find it odd that he is an ambassador for us now?

He loves LSU. Like someone’s 1st love.
He cheated on his 1st love, and tried to get with the rich, hot chick (MIAMI).
Found out he messed up, went back to his 1st love & asked for another chance (people at LSU, for better or worse, moved on & rejected Saban/agent)
He looked for the next best spot, and due to timing, found out it would be MUCH easier at UA, than anywhere not named LSU, to win big.
Saban was younger & brasher back then. I wouldn’t doubt a part of him was pissed that he was told “NO you can’t take over from Miles”. Therefore, he did what Saban does……put his ALL into winning.
He still had a soft spot for LSU, and with age, maturing, and then retirement - did what he could when LSU needed help. He still had a good relationship with many at LSU, including Verge.
Again, timing played a big part, and knowing the closest person to be his protege was CLK, worked back channels to take care of his 1st love.
His legacy is set for both LSU and BAMA.

it sucks to think "what could have been". The last 25 years have already been better than I ever expected back in the 90s.
That would have been something, if they fired Les to bring back Nick. I guess thats what buyouts are for.

Saban knows he screwed up. I give him credit for giving Lane his honest advice, even though it caused a little friction at the school where he's still being paid.
Did he regret leaving LSU….absolutely but to say he screwed up is a stretch. Lol

Not at all. Saban loves us, we had just stopped loving him.

I don’t find it odd.
I think he left because he wanted to coach NFL, then learned he didn’t really want that headache.
He went to Bama because it was open, andLSU wasn’t. Which it’s long been said that he wanted to return to LSU but we already had Les under contract.
By the time we dumped Les, he was firmly entrenched at BAMA and wasn’t going to leave for LSU.
I don’t think he suddenly wants BAMA to fail as much he regrets leaving LSU.
As for it being BAMA OR Saban that cause the dominance, I don’t think there is any doubt it was SABAN that created what BAMA is.
Bama lucked into having 2 of the best coaches ever in Saban and Bryant. Outside of those 2 coaches they aren’t anything that special

Bless him. He's responsible for elevating the LSU program, winning national championships, and making us a relevant national power.
Exactly. Every bit of the success of LSU football this century thus far is due to Nick Saban and the foundation he laid.

It's not that he's an ambassador, it's that he's now in a position where he can be openly honest about how he feels about LSU.
LSU made his career as much as he made LSU what it has been for the last 25 years. He recognizes that and is very fond of his time spent at LSU.

LSU would still be sitting at 0 championships had he not come here. Yes, I also believe LSU would have a couple more had he stayed but we have nothing without him.

I always wondered if those Candi rumors were true?
I have no idea either way

You can call Saban many things, but disingenuous is not one of them.
Whatever combination of coaching, teaching, and mindset he brought to the conference started at LSU and eventually changed the entire sport.
LSU is the one that got away from him. And i’ll take anything he’s willing to give.

What I find odd is how our fanbase suddenly loves the man??? I don’t remember calling him Nick Satan and having Nick Saban bonfires because we loved him??
Posted on 1/26/26 at 2:08 am to Deano54
Not really. Nick won his first title at LSU and that has to mean a bunch to him. Me personally, I was never able to hate him at Bama because of that (although it sucked he built a dynasty there).

it wasn’t the Bama machine that drove nearly 2 decades of dominance - it was Nick freaking Saban.
the only people who don't seem to get this are Bama fans. There are probably a dozen schools out there that would have had a similar run if Saban had been coaching there.

He's definitely getting set up for a big celebration in two years of the 25th anniversary of the national title he won with LSU.
This would be the first time in forever that Saban would be properly welcomed on campus and be able to have the kind of celebration of that team that it deserves.

I like it of course, but I imagine some Bammers don't care for it. It's been said he'll always regret leaving LSU. Maybe this is his way of somehow making peace with that decision and helping LSU as much as possible.

You know it’s possible for him to love both schools right? He isn’t a fan. He’s a HC who was very successful at both places.

I know he’s said this many time and I’m sure there’s some truth to it, but the biggest regret for him has to be passing on Brees for Culpepper.
My how different LSU/bama/saints/dolphins would look right now had that not happened.
