Extra Benefit: An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or an athletics representative to provide a prospect or a student-athlete (or the prospect or student-athlete's relatives or friends) with a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. The following are examples of extra benefits:

Providing transportation for any purpose.

But I'm not going to rack my brain trying to understand the logic or application of NCAA rules.

I'm sure Saban isn't that stupid and knows the rules plus I have seen him do this many years.

Just beat him on the field or STFU...

Did they try to siphon some gas from one of the players' Dodge Chargers?

Harbaugh took his team to Rome and Normandy, next year South Africa. I'm not sure how this isn't a violation of rules but an assistant coach giving a player a ride across town is, but that's the NCAA.

It was recruit and the violations weren't that big but Pearl told everybody to lie about it.

Is a coach allowed to take his players to his camp and out boat riding? Especially to a camp located in another state.

I don't care if he does it every year. Coaches cannot even give players rides across campus as that is considered an extra benefit not available to other university students

Saban and Mark Emmert are as close as you can get. BAMA gets away with everything and plays by a totally different set of rules. Anyone who does not see this is blind as frick. This is nothing compared to the other egregious violations and favoritism they get away with. I’ve learned to accept it and move on.

One of the best things a HC can do is invite players into his home and do stuff like this. I’ll be first in line to applaud any coach that goes skiing / has bbqs / breaks rules to spend social time with his players .

I mean I get what you're saying. But Jeff Grimes used to host his offensive linemen for pool parties at his house during the summer, saban has done this for years, and O would take guice with him to the movies with his family and no sanctions has been brought. Quite frankly I hate Bama but what Saban is doing is nothing wrong and something he should do. Let's be honest the problem is the NCAA is corrupt and none of their rules makes sense. The coaches can supply you with bagels but cannot supply you with the cream cheese...NCAA needs to be disbanded and a new organization needs to be put in place with better rules than the current format. (Sorry for the long post response)

I think pearl was doing something with recruits. Saban is not taking players to his Georgia Lake house. I am pretty sure his house in Tuscaloosa is on a lake too.

I don't disgree with your thoughts on this, but the NCAA regulations ae so hypocritical. This would clearly appear to be a violation. The rule may be an arse, buts its still the rule.

The bigger issue is the discrinating enforcement of rules and punishment by the NCAA.

Marcus Spears used to basically live at Saban's house in Baton Rouge. I remember there being a story about Spears taking a date there to fish or something like that. Saban told her that she could do better.

I doubt that was open to regular students

You may think this is facetious but Bruce Pearl got Tennesse basketball on probation by hosting barbecues for his players and he was eventually fired by the university as a result.

He was fired and sanctioned for lying. What he did was permissible by the time his show cause was levied.

It’s unfortunate that our only hope at beating Alabama hinges on the amount of gas in Nick Saban’s ski boat.

How times have changed

No matter where it occurred sAban provided an extra benefit to his players that was not available to other students and that is an NCAA violation , no matter how petty it may be. Now if he had opened hisa camp and provided boat rides to all students it might pass muster.

Why would that be an issue? Seems like a team building event. Why wouldn’t a coach be able to do that for his players? frick the NCAA if they bring down punishment for this. Bama or not that would be some bs.

Your point is totally irrelevant to this thread If this was the Texas A&M coach it would still be a violation.

Either we have absurd NCAA rules or not, but if the rule is in effect it cannot be violated by anone, whether Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson or whoever.
