I've seen buzz around the HS kid Max Clark lately. Supposedly willing to sign underslot a good bit to be the 1 overall.

With the draft as deep as it is, if they can get him to go a couple million or more below slot, they'd be idiots not to take that.

Might be a dumb question, but if Crews were to fall to 1/2 in this case, wouldn't he get just about the same as taking the cut from the pirates?

It's not a dumb question. The slot value for the #2 pick is about $800k less than the #1 overall pick, so yeah this sounds like a stupid rumor. There have, however, been rumors that the Pirates won't select Crews or Skenes to save money on their end. It makes no sense for a player to ask not to be taken #1

Id imagine skenes will go 1 if crews doesnt

Pirates are looking for their center fielder of the future. They signed Reynolds to a contract and have started the transition of him to left field. If they don’t take Crews they’ll take Langford. Which is wild because I don’t think he projects as a center fielder in the pros by many. I’ve heard the Pirates think Crews and Langford are really close.

They were talking about this during the world Series games when discussing who would go first. They brought up a lot about a team wanting to "save money"

Skenes would go 1 if Crews doesn’t go to Pitt.

Wonder if MLB has ever had a Eli Manning situation where the player refuses to play for the team that picked him

Reynolds seems to be more of a CF than Langford to me, but what do I know.

Save money on one pick to be spent on another.

Context is important.

No team underspends their draft pool.

The only payday is the signing bonus. The contract dollars are simply that until they get to the bigs. They will get the same minor league deals as everyone else ($400-$800 per week) until they get called up.

So the extra million matters. Not only to the player but to the agent.

MLB draft is so odd sometimes. People really will pass on generational talents to save a few bucks

If they got Langford that's not really passing on generational talent. Maybe Crews is slightly better, but if they use the excess money to strengthen another position they could come out head.

Langford is most definitely not a MLB center fielder, just doesnt have the range/speed. Not a knock on him just the truth, he's a corner outfielder in pro ball.

Crews and Langford are very similar prospects but a differentiator is definitely speed between the 2 of them. It's not a huge difference, but Crews to some degree might not even be seen as MLB CF by some, where with Langofrd I would think the majority of teams dont see him as a CF.

Crews and Skenes might not go 1-2, but they will be the two highest paid players in the draft.

CBS mock draft with analysis about underslot deals
Could definitely happen as the MLB is crazy
If I'm Crews not going to Pirates might be a blessing
I do want the LSU players going 1 and 2 but the draft itself can get weird, Crews and Skenes need to use all that leverage to get best deals possible
