Tiger Band is very much a part of the football experience that your said fans have seen since ever. Just because you don't care doesn't mean noone else should.

I would bet my house that less fans care what you have to say.

Sorry to hurt your feelings. Also sorry Roy denied you marching in his band.

Who gives a flying frick about an ex-band director? Nobody is going to give a single frick about this so it's not really bad press because nobody cares.

Of course you are correct. That's why there are SEVEN pages on this thread and counting, because nobody cares.

Pure genius.

Only everyone that posted before you did here. And several years worth of former students who respect him, and also several newspapers and news outlets.

Obviously this is purely anecdotal but I was with a rather significant donor to LSU who lives in BR and he knew "something was going on" but had no idea of the specifics and generally didn't care.

Wow. WTF. It's like a federal investigation over the friken "band" (funded by the Athletic Department). If we could only get Fu King Alexander to have Mr Chad Brackin, LSU Chief Auditor to investigate our failing "Athletic Programs", we could fix some schit at LSU.

Mr Chad Brackin is no "sunshine pumper".

Formal request to Fu King Alexander:

Could you please have Mr Brackin investigate (with his Eagle Eye), Joe Alleva, and All failing Athletic Programs, especially including the embarrassingly failing basketball, swimming, and tennis programs.

Thanks in advance.

I heard something was going on as early as the fall semester, but that they were hesitant to fire him because of the backlash it would create. (I've talked to people who work at the School of Music, while not everyone knows everything at SOM they know more than the average person on this board.)

I believe this is more than a money grab, Roy King was doing some bad stuff that was going to get him fired eventually, LSU just waited till now to do it.

I certainly think the SOM was looking at the calendar when they took this action. Since they were not prepared to charge King with a crime, they knew the dismissal would be more administrative and would get the type of push-back we've seen. So, waiting until the end of the basketball seasons puts the whole thing in the "off-season" for athletic bands. One benefit is that the players in the band aren't put in a position where they might boycott a game.

If you are so connected to the SOM, please share your intimate knowledge of this alleged "bad stuff."

You talked to the group that was grabbing the money and they indicated he was doing something wrong. Hmmmm, wonder why they would say that?

In the current climate of proposed budget cuts and increased scrutiny on higher ed, the entire School of Music is an easy mark for the chopping block. TGBFTL could easily file under the dept of athletics and keep similar framework.

Right on - on all counts! LSU had the same problem with Tom Tyra back in the 60s. He was finally fired and LSU brought in Bill Swor who turned the band into something special. Less so, but interesting, were the situations with L. Bruce Jones and Nick Rouse. Even Bill Swor left under difficult circumstances. (I go back a long, long way.). Seems like every few years thewre's a problem with the Tiger Band. This too shall pass. And the interim director seems to have serious credentials.

Really? Never? Please feel free to elaborate?

School of Music is a solid example of a luxury degree than can be acquired at a smaller liberal arts school

Is that right? Is that why all major colleges are cutting their marching band programs?

Maybe you should elaborate. Or go away.

Well, not really. Music schools are extremely expensive, both because of the amount of private one-on-one instruction that goes on and because scholarship money is essential in recruiting good music students, who are the most highly recruited group of high school students, next to athletes and national merit scholars. Very few small liberal arts schools have a music program that is very good because of these factors. (I am fortunate enough to work at one that does.) A good school of music requires a considerable investment on the part of administration. There has to be a willingness to spend the money and the belief that doing so will result in a net gain to the university in prestige, additional students, etc.

There are some decent music schools in the Southeast, but very few that would be considered among the best in the country. FSU and Miami are generally considered the best programs in the region. There was a time when LSU was considered the next name on the list, but has been severely hurt in recent decades by declining scholarship money available (meaning they miss out on a lot of good students that instead end up at other schools) and, more recently, poor leadership.
