"Roy King was doing some bad stuff that was going to get him fired eventually, LSU just waited till now to do it."

I admit I phrased this poorly, but they were considering firing him in the fall, that is as much as I knew, I was told a story, but I don't remember it well enough to spread it here. Maybe the story I heard was BS, but I trust the source it came from. I was basically told that Roy King will probably get fired but it won't happen till after the football season. I didn't go digging for the reasons because I didn't give a crap. But I was told from someone who works in the SOM that Roy King was probably going to be let go, I heard this back in November.

I personally don't care if you guys believe me or not, and the only thing I'm saying is that I was told that they were considering this in the Fall. (I assumed he did something that deserved firing. But I also don't want to drop a story that I haven't heard in like 4 months and find out I told it in the wrong way.)

Let me put it this way, I heard from someone who heard from one of their colleagues that Roy was going to be let go eventually. They were not given specifics about why or when, just that it was probably going to happen. This happens all the time in Schools and work-places. You guys here expect me to know all of the details or I'm not trust worthy.

But whatever, I'm done with this, I've made my point, as I said it's like 1 vs 100.

Look, I am a proud graduate of the LSU School of Music. You're right that it is a "solid" institution, but I think it's a stretch to suggest that it's one of the best in the country (and that has nothing to do with what's going on with Roy and Tiger Band). That is not to say there are not good things going on at LSU, and I know for a fact that there are some excellent faculty members and students in the SOM.

I don't know why you're so focused on Eastman graduates. Sure, some very good people come out of there, and it is considered an upper tier school, but their graduates are working all over the country, in schools of all sizes and qualities. Believe me, they are just happy to have jobs in their field, like the rest of us in academia. Hate to tell you this, but there is no special cachet that comes from having a couple of Eastman grads on your faculty, or graduates from Indiana, Michigan, or any other top notch school, just as it is no knock to have a faculty member from a lesser known program. The degree means only so much.

I have no doubt that it has taken a few steps back recently, but I think we should give it more credit than you are giving it. You probably have a better experience than I do, because you went to school there. The original reason I posted all this was because someone said they could get a similar degree elsewhere and it not be a step down. Sure out of state you could but this guy was suggesting in state, while there is Loyola which has a good music program, I don't know if the other in-state schools have the same level of music of LSU.

But closing the school of music wouldn't be good for the School, or the State. Sure music is far from the most important part of LSU, but I think you should give it more worth than you are giving it.

About Eastman, sure every school gets some of them, but they still don't just go anywhere. I know personally the 3 Eastman grads who work at LSU, one of them I don't know much about (the dean) but the other two are pretty good, I know one of them is one of the more premiere members of his own field. Again I haven't taken the time to compare him to other people, but he really is solid and LSU is really lucky to have him. Sure two professors don't make a college, but from my experience of the SOM, we are solid, and at-least the top music program in the state.

Besides that...the "80% non-music major" statistic is pretty close for Tiger Band. I was part of this statistic myself for 5 years.

thanks for posting this, good to know.

Is this down from past years?

Also I would bet the 20% are the top of their sections, maybe I'm wrong but I would assume music majors would be better than non-music majors. Don't mean any disrespect, but I would still think even with that 80% figure, TGBFTL would take a step back if the School of Music was closed.

No. It's just whomever wants to audition. Yes, TB has auditions. And, every year, more people audition than they have spots for. It's not just about who can play their instrument better. It's also about who can actually match while playing. When I was in TB, we had an extremely good trombonist not make TB because he couldn't March. He was from out-of-state, N.Y. And his high school didn't have marching band. Good enough to make wind ensemble (top band) but not good enough to make Arab. Seems backwards, but it's a different set of techniques.

Also, many non-music majors are still fantastic instrumentalists sets. We had a trumpet player who wasn't a music major, but still madewind ensemble (rare, but happens). I believe he majored in some type of computer information something or another...CDSI, maybe?
