Relax about Pelini - The Guy's a Great D Coordinator - Trust O

For those concerned about Pelini, a little history lesson. The angst is because he's been off the truly national stage the past five seasons and because he's a hot head. But the guy can flat out coach defense. The notion that he's some relic of a bygone era has no basis.
Pelini played free safety for Ohio State, graduating in 1991. Beginning in 1994 (at the age of 27), he coached DBs or LBs for eight seasons with the 49ers, Patriots and Packers.
In 2003, at the age of 35, he became the defensive coordinator for Nebraska. He took a defense ranked 55th nationally to 11th. The HC, Frank Solich got canned after going 9-3 and Pelini served as interim HC for the Nebraska bowl game, which they won 17-3. Nebraska picked Bill Callahan (who would go 27-22 the next 4 years) over Pelini for the permanent head coaching job. By the way, as soon as Pelini left, the defense fell back to 56th in the country in 2004.
After not getting the Nebraska gig, Bob Stoops hired him as DC. The Sooners defense ranked 11th in scoring defense and 6th against the run.
Miles then went out and poached Pelini in 2005. From 2005 through the NC season of 2007, LSU finished top 3 in total defense.
Pelini got the head gig at Nebraska. At Nebraska he never won less than 9 games a season and he won a Big 12 or Big Ten division 4 times. His problem was his personality. Three incidents stood out.
First, a tape of him from 2011 leaked in 2013. In 2011, Nebraska was losing 27-6 to Ohio State and the fans left in droves. The Cornhuskers made a great comeback and won 34-27 and after the game, in private, Pelini told his team:
In a 2013 game, Pelini lost his cool with an ESPN reporter at halftime and got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He didn't help things in his post game press conference by saying that the personal foul call was "chicken shite and:
The dude clearly has (or had) anger management issues.
But he went 66-28 at Nebraska. Since his firing, Nebraska is 28-34 with one winning season.
If you are going to have concerns about the hire, it's about his personality. And I would agree it would be a question about defending the spread, but the guy's been coaching albeit at the FCS level these last 5 years. He's had tremendous success as a defensive coach his entire life. I think he knows football.
In short, I think it is very fair to be concerned about his personality. And I think it's fine to be a little worried about what he's been doing in obscurity the past 5 years. But let's not act like he's Lou Tepper or Les Miles either.
Coach O has to decide if he is comfortable that Pelini has matured and if he believes Pelini can handle Air Raid offenses. If he's satisfied, then so am I.

Who does Bo currently work for? Jim friggin Tressell. That’s a red flag in itself. This is LSU, we don’t do Bo.

This would make more sense if Bo pelini had not already worked for LSU and not only has he worked for LSU but he was coordinator of some of our best defenses.
As to the OP. I want that intensity for my DC. I want a little more control by my HC but DC, bring it on.

People don't understand that Pellini went to Youngstown St. to re-set while staying an HC. If he would've decided earlier to come back to college as a DC, he would not be on the market today! People act like this is a reach by O. I don't believe for one second O is "settling" here. This is who he wanted!

Great post. I, for the life of me, cannot figure why anyone would not value Pelini as a candidate. The guy has coached some of the best defenses in the NCAA. Not to mention, a period where offenses in the SEC were freaking juggernauts week in and week out. That defense had balls and some of the best DL, DBs, & LBs LSU fans have ever seen.

A large reason on his prolonged stay at youngstown was family reasons.
He would have been the hottest name on the market at the time if he wanted to be a DC after leaving nebraska

Good right up and excellent reminder of Bo’s PROVEN track record of success.
Intense and hard nosed. You want toughness ? You want aggressive? You want a defense that can punch the opponent in the mouth and then finish em?
Bo has delivered these type of defenses.

Hire him and don’t think or worry about it for a second. It’s a coup if we get Bo Pelini. Pay him $2M and get ready for another run at back to back ships. He’s that good guys.

I laugh at all these posters who have the “OK Boomer” mentality. Would they take Andy Reid as OC? Probably not.
Go hire Richard cuz he’s “young” and “up and coming” so we can do this again in 2 years when he moves on.
Pelini would be a great hire, not only because he’s a great DC but because he would be here for a while.
Could be our Venebles. Don’t underestimate staff stability going forward.

Is there anything official about this?
Posted on 1/20/20 at 7:53 pm to ROPO
if that is the guy Orgeron wanted then I am all for it. Great Hire, glad to have him aboard. Now that we have a DC in place, time to get the PGC and finish filling this staff so we can finish strong in recruiting.

has any word come out yet on what is salary is going to be. Was just wondering if he is going to be paid up in the range that Aranda was paid.

No. There are conflicting reports among “insiders”

I think O wants a little more aggressive defensive plan. Pelini fits O’s vision of the type D he wants imo.

Lol. Tressell went to BCS Bowl after BCS bowl
and was pushed out after a scandal which involves players profiting off of their own name and likeness. That’s about to be legal. Where do you fricking morons come from?

So you are a "Boom" kinda guy then??? He used to go bizerk on the sidelines.

Sorry. I remember his tenure here at LSU and he was definitely a step down from Amanda. There r better ones out there.
