I don’t know that Hess has been a disappointment. To think he’d transition from a closer to a consistent shut down starter after what we saw last year was a stretch IMO

Hess ahs pitched okay in spots, but he came back this year to be the ace and has a losing record.

I think even Hess would tell you he is disappointed not being an ace pitcher.

Lange and Nola were aces, you went into every Friday game expecting a win. That's what many of us hoped for with Hess, and he really has not come to close to that.

So I am not trying to knock on the kid, just keeping it real.

The margin of error in SEC is razor thin right now
Look at Fla - could you imagine the outrage if you reverse the SEC record of LSU and Fla

Who in the SEC is always good these days?

Solid post from OP. It's been a frustrating year for sure. But it's pretty great to be in the spot we're in considering how poor we've played in spots and the injuries we've dealt with on top of the inconsistencies of this squad. These next three weeks will ultimately tell the tale of this team.

Obviously Bama sucks, but I was encouraged to see the starts we got out of Walker and Marceaux

If by powerhouse you mean a dynasty like under Bertman, you are right. But no college baseball today team would qualify as a dynasty with that bar.

LSU is not just another SEC team if you look at year in and year out. No SEC team has been as consistently in the conversation as LSU.

Remember when SC was one the top programs in the league? Look at them now. They would probably kill for the kind of consistency we've had.

You have to include Peterson as a disappointment. It seemed that he was primed to be a standout closer this year and based on the Sunday game, when Fontenot got into trouble, Manieri didn't look like he even considered bringing in Peterson. He also took Peterson out quickly in a previous game. When he's on, he can be good, but that fastball down the middle keeps getting him in trouble.

aside from the vagueness of the statement, this is debateable at best.

Step 2 - I post the records
Step 3 - I get excoriated by pm defenders

Even if lsu wins a few games in Omaha this year, it would still be debateable

Hess has always pitched well in spots but has rarely shown the kind of consistency you need from a starter -- especially a Friday night starter. So I think if anyone expected him to jump in and be Aaron Nola or Alex Lange, those were unrealistic expectations.

I think Mainieri put him in the Friday slot at the beginning of the season to give him a chance to show he could be that Friday ace. But I also think he half expected someone else to step up and take that spot away from him. Then we had arm issues and we had no one else to turn to. Finally, with Henry having a few good outings in a row, we thought he'd be the guy but he had soreness too. I still think we'll see Hess working out of the pen before this season is over.

I also think that role fits Hess' personality better. He's a fiery, emotional guy (not unlike Peterson) and guys like that are better at coming in and overpowering hitters for an inning or two. Starters tend to be more even keel because you can't afford to get too up or too down over the course of a 5-7 inning stint.

Good thread PT.

Go for it

Vandy, Florida and Arkansas are teams that come to mind who have had similar success as LSU in recent years. Florida sucks this year. Vandy went 16-14 in the SEC last year.

Would like to see the Sunday field-lineup more often during the final stretch (batting order can change), and into the postseason:
Watson CF
Duplantis RF
Beloso 1B
Smith SS
Dugas 2B
Reid 3B
Cabrera LF
DiGiacomo DH (or Bianco)
Garza C
GOOD balance of defense/offense.

Getting Henry back healthy is imperative, and optimally some other P needs to step forward that is capable of going 4-5 IP to help this team W in the tourney formats.

If we can get Henry back, things are looking up for the pitching staff. Marceaux's outing yesterday was encouraging; Walker seems to be regaining his freshman form. Maybe if we can get Hill back too we'll have enough arms for a tournament run.

Last 11 years LSU has been to the CWS 5 times to UF 7. No teams in the country have been more in that span. I could be wrong that's off the top of my head. Even so that's fricking good

That’s where you are wrong. If Henry was healthy, he would have pitched on Friday night in game 1.

Random fact: After this weekend, Mainieri's win percentage at LSU is exactly .700.

I have plenty of win percentages calculated, like post season, each post season level, versus other conferences, versus teams from a particular state. If anyone is interested in any specific ones I'll post them. I don't have records vs specific opponents done.

I believe Garza has been the biggest disappointment thus far. He seems to be back to or very close to 100% healthy Now that he is getting consistent playing time I think he will improve quickly

If LSU is lucky, Garza can get hot for the postseason like Jim Greely did in '93. One really hot bat can completely change a lineup.
