Random LSU baseball team thoughts

- This team is not the dominant baseball team many hoped they would be. Dominant teams can have off days and still win. This team is not good enough to have bad days and win.
- There is no college baseball team LSU can not beat on a good day. Miss State might be ranked first or second nationally had they not lost series to LSU. There is no dominant team in college baseball his year.
- With 6 out of their last 9 games at home, LSU is in excellent shape to win the West, its a logjam at the top.
- Hess has probably been the biggest disappointment, he was supposed to be the ace but has a losing record. He needs to go back to being a closer where, for some reason, he seems more focused and comfortable.
- Cole Henry has been the biggest surprise, he gives us a chance to win even on off days by keeping the games close.
- While not in the driver's seat to host a regional or super regional, LSU is still very much in the hunt and the conversation.
- The catching is slowly improving, but you would think a team like LSU would have a better defensive catcher. Papierski spoiled us.
- Injuries to pitchers and position players have hurt, but LSU seems to be getting healthy at the right time. We need Henry to be okay, we might have swept Bama with him.
- Its tough to be always in the conversation every year, like LSU is. Look at Florida at 9-12 and South Carolina at 5-16.
- I think LSU ties the West by going 6-3 over their last 9 games, provided that two of those six wins are at Arkansas. A 7-2 finish would be almost certain to win the West. Arkansas and State both play two of their three series on the road. Both teams travel to number 10 Texas A&M.
- Ole Miss is in the hunt too, and the road for LSU to the West title and a regional host starts with LSU having to at least win 2 of 3 against Ole miss this weekend.
- All the goals for this LSU team are still available. They just have to get hot at the end and they have to win the Arky series.

First in to say the post was too long and I didn't read it.

I don’t know that Hess has been a disappointment. To think he’d transition from a closer to a consistent shut down starter after what we saw last year was a stretch IMO

Agree with everything but this:
Hess would’ve still started game one.

I believe Garza has been the biggest disappointment thus far.

It's hard to tell with the SEC being so good this year. It will be nice to play a regional and get out of the SEC grind that it is. The pitching in the SEC has been outstanding, never seen this many power arms in this conference.
It will be west coast vs sec in Omaha.
UCLA, Stanford and Oregon St all legit out on the west coast this year. These teams are all putting up some impressive offensive numbers as well which you usually don't see out west.
Will be interesting to see how committee pairs regionals up this year, I think you will see some SEC supers paired up and the road to a national title will go through some west coast teams in Omaha.

I thought Manieri had said before this weekend that Henry was starting on Fridays and Hess was going back to the pen. Then Henry got hurt..

Yeah but maybe Garza can get hot this last month, not sure why Bama was trying to pitch him inside but he can turn on them with the best of them.
Plus his defense is giving LSU a chance on choking off the run game.

CPM had already penciled Cole as the Friday night pitcher prior to knowing about the arm soreness.

To be fair he is a month at least behind everyone else because of his knee injury but I agree he should be doing a little better than he is with the bat. Behind the plate he is a huge upgrade over Mathis.

He seems to be back to or very close to 100% healthy
Now that he is getting consistent playing time I think he will improve quickly

Season started off kinda shaky with some close ending wins and this trend has continued all year long....
I don't see any leadership among the players or coaches...but I have never been a CPM fan...
Overall LSU baseball is no longer a powerhouse team just another SEC team....sometimes good sometimes not...

Nobody's a power team anymore.
Florida? No
South Carolina? No
Vanderbilt? No

Maineri said that had Henry been able to go he was going on Friday and Hess was going to the pen....at best if Henry we're available I think Hess may have started Sunday.

The SEC has improved so much that "just another SEC team" *is* a powerhouse.

A case could be made for sure.....but he is still better than Mathis.

I don't disagree that Hess has been a disappointment. I do disagree with the metric used to make that determination.
There have been guys in the SEC with losing records but ace stuff. And even ace stats outside of W-L. Hess hasn't been as consistent as we would want out of our Friday night guy, and that's disappointing.
