i would love to know who is responsible for deeming these words obscene.

i mean...........crap is acceptable but shite isn't? what is it that makes crap acceptable over shite? is it the short "a" sound? is it the short "i" sound?

Here's a secret that you may already know. Anytime, anywhere you have intoxicated people, you're going to have cursing. You're going to have fights. You're going to have people causing trouble.

There used to be some decorum in Tiger Stadium. People would dress up and it seemed like almost everyone would mix drinks in the stands. But people weren't drinking to get out of control drunk, they drank because that's what you did. 80k would drink and cheer and stay the whole game, most of which were at night, and then go to church the next morning.

Even with that the stadium seemed louder and more fun, maybe that's because I remember as a child, I don't know. But there was more rooting for LSU and less rooting against the other team.

It's not just the profanity that's cheapened the game day experience now, it's the corporate feeling that has really been the downfall of the atmosphere.

quote:

vivid memory, though not obscene, was when a central American dictator with some connection to LSU came to a game. The student section booed him when he was announced.

A lot of the Samozas from Nicaragua went to LSU the student section probably booed one of them.

Did you go to the FSU game in 1982? I remember the fans throwing oranges after LSU scored then throwing them at everyone after the game as the fans stormed the field. One of the coolest game experiences ever!

Went to 2 games that year...first game of the year against Oregon State, and the FSU game. Still have both pennants I made my Dad buy me from the vendors that used to roll around the tailgaters in shopping carts.

Coolest thing about that game, aside from the throwing of oranges, was the huge amount of fog that rolled in during the second half of the game. Imagine the smoke that lingers around the stadium after the fireworks at the beginning of the game, except you could see it rolling in from outside of the stadium. It was like an old horror movie. and back then, the lights were kind of shitty...so it felt even eerier.

I half way followed LSU football before then, but that year before the season started my dad brought me to a booster club meeting somewhere in St. Bernard I think and Coach Stoval was there along with a handful of players...most notably Gary James and Dalton Hilliard. Getting to meet those two before their freshman year and the watching them that year solidified LSU football in my brain. I remember crying when we lost to Nebraska in a close game that following January, and have hated Nebraska ever since.

Here's a definition for you and I think the highlighted words fit the chant. Source is Oxford dictionary. To answer your question, most mature adults would find the chant obscene

obscene

(of the portrayal or description of sexual matters) offensive or disgusting by accepted standards of morality and decency.

synonyms: pornographic, indecent, smutty, salacious, dirty, filthy, X-rated, explicit, lewd, rude, vulgar, coarse, crude, offensive, immoral, improper, impure, off-color, degenerate, depraved, debauched;

Oh Lord no. People with umbrellas would open/close/etc and the water would drip over everyone. Lol. And thank goodness smoking isn’t allowed anymore. Just showing how things change.

that doesn't answer my question.

i mean..........did a committee sit at a table and make a list of what words are acceptable in society?

why in the world does the F word piss you off and the word "sex" doesn't?

is it the "uh" sound? someone had to deem this word "vulgar". and my question is: what makes it vulgar?

I was there! Cops took off their name tags and beat the crap out of students rushing the field. It was pure pandemonium!

Been going to games since 1983.

It was a LOT different back then, and a lot better. The worst I ever heard done by a crowd while I was at school was SOME people changing "L-S-U" at the end of the 1st down cheer to "kick-their-arse!" Also a little rude, but not vulgar was the Tiger Rag "Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha" chant, which EVERYONE did...

I never heard "a-hole" for Tiger rag until several years later (1988-90) when I was away in grad school: I came back for a game and my younger sister who was by then attending LSU told me that's how the cheer went now.

I have been going to home games on season tickets since the late 1990s, brought my daughter to games since they were little. Although it has gotten progressively worse since then, it wasn't that bad, but it's gotten REALLY bad in the last few years. 'STTDB' is pretty much the bottom of the barrel and hopefully a turning point.

Good story. Unfortunately I was at the Tulane game too. How do you go to the Orange Bowl and lose to Tulane in the same season? It's crazy to think that Tulane was actually a rivalry game back then.

Hell yeah. I was an usher (Boy Scouts) in the late fifties and it seemed almost all the men smoked. I just don't remember a lot of cursing except from the drunks.

In the 70s and 80s the low IQ cheer was “ ****! You fig ! “. You never went a game without that brilliant one. There were a LOT more drinks back then too imho. The smell of bourbon everywhere everybody had flasks.

It was way worse. Fights in student section all game. Fights in concession areas. Everybody snuck in fifths of bourbon and vodka(drinking age was 18). Ohio State was bombarded by piss bombs in 1987. The whole student section bombarding the field with oranges in 1982. It was a free-for-all. It's way tamer now.

Back in the 70's through 90's, were games at Tiger Stadium this wholesome, american dream type family experience? Or are people just romanticizing an ideal which has never been real?

No one has claimed it was or should be a “wholesome, american dream type family experience”. There’s a lot of middle ground between that and thousands of people screaming about sucking dicks, only ignorant people think of it in terms of those two extremes.
