Back in the 70's through 90's, were games at Tiger Stadium this wholesome, american dream type family experience? Or are people just romanticizing an ideal which has never been real?

Go ahead and downvote away... I agree, the neck stuff is getting old. But this is a serious question, as I didn't have the privilege of attending a game until the 2000's. But I do remember seeing some pretty brutal, hateful games between LSU and Auburn, etc. on TV.

There were obscenities, mostly from drunks. There was no organized obscene cheer, except for Go to Hell, Ole Miss, Go to Hell.

I grew up in Tiger Stadium. There were a few drunken idiots, mostly in the student section, but in SE it was a lot of "Dude! Chill out there are kids around!". I do not remember hearing the F word in the stadium, but in general, people didn't cuss as much overall.

Times were different back then in the '70s/'80s, chanting "go to hell" was on the edge of being questionable, and the "kick their arse" chant was also pushing the envelope. So given that landscape, there have always been those types of issues.

Sure, there was the"a-hole a-hole" chant during the fight song which forced the song to be modified. This was late 80s early 90s. Don't let these sanctimonious hypocrites fool you.

Depends on your definition of obscene, but the were definitely organized chants with cursing to various band songs. I was there '88-90

I remember my dad knuckle checking drunk dudes in TS on the regualr when I was a little kid. Some of my fondest memories of him.

Nope, not even close. The whole "Neck" thing doesn't bother me. I like the song so much I am willing to ignore the words. But lets be honest here. They banned the full version of "Tiger Rag" because of the a-hole chant. So it is understandable that they did it to "Neck". There is a huge difference between chanting "a-hole a-hole" than there is in chanting "STTDB". It comes off as very trashy. I wish the students would adjust the words so it could be played. But I am not going to bitch about it. Drunk or even sober 18-22 year old's will do stuff that people find distasteful or offensive I did it too at that age, it is what it is.

I started going to LSU games in 1971 as a kid. My first experience was the 28-8 Win against ND. The atmosphere was amazingly intense and loud, but NEVER orchestrated chants of profanity that I can ever recall. That game left a life long effect on me bleeding purple and gold. Then sold cokes and programs as a teenager in the 70s just so I could always be in Tiger Stadium for all games. Then never missed a game from 77-81 as a student at LSU. In Tiger Band for 2 years and then sat in the raucous Fraternity area of the student section last 2 years. In all those experiences, fans, and especially students got pretty roudy, sometimes with profanity, but the only orchestrated chants heard across the entire stadium was “Tiger bait” when the opposing team came out of their tunnel onto the field, and those chants facilitated by the Cheerleaders, like “hot boudin”.

Games were generally a rougher experience years ago. There was a lot of coarse language and I saw a lot more booze back then than I do now.

It was less in a general sense but probably not far off from what was edgy for each time period
It’s TV that’s exaggerating the Neck issue

There were no organized cheers like happens with Neck. There were, and always will be individual acts of drunken behavior which isn't that bad of an issue since it doesn't make national television.

I don’t know how long this was going about, but I remember when I was younger they use to play tiger rag.

The fan base would laugh and say “assholes”
