I would say there were more drunks and as much or more cussing. My dad took me as a kid back then and just told me to not repeat what I heard.

There were more fights as well.

I remember as a kid the worst I ever felt as a LSU fan was watching some drunk nimrod follow the drum major of the UF band out the stadium and another 10 yards cussing in his face the whole time.

There was actually less exposure to profanity for the young. Television shows had much less profanity. I didn't hear my first curse word from a peer until I was 7 (1975), and that was, "Damn." Now my 7 year-old son wants to know if the "F" word is a bad word.

And he doesn't even have access to a cell phone or own a video game.

Such is life.

bullshite. I have had the old timers tell me about games back in the 50's and 60's about how much people drank at the games. Heard about some legendary fight stories between fans back in the days, especially LSU vs Tulane.

I see your point. But “suck that tiger dick, bitch” is a lot raunchier than “kick their arse” in my opinion. It reinforces the idea that we are a-hole trash to visiting fans.

People were sneaking alcohol in back then as well. I was a middle school kid in the 90s and remember seeing fights in the stands. So no, IMHO it was never a wholesome event.

I've been attending since the late 60's, when I didn't understand what a first down was (yes, I'm old LOL) Adults consumed much alcohol while tailgating and cops directing traffic would often indulge in the delicious food and beverages.

My parents and their friends ALWAYS had flasks, but the routine was to STOP at halftime, allowing time to sober up somewhat and drive home.

Participating in a fight was a no-brainer for getting thrown out of the stadium.

Parents dressed in suits and ties and dresses and high heels, especially homecoming (which usually included corsages, even for the young daughters).

Drinks were NEVER tossed at the field or other attendees. Besides messing up the nice clothing and hairdos, it was a waste of good liquor.

While tailgating, kids could roam campus freely (no cell phones) without a worry of today's dangers. I loved those simpler times...Take me back to Mayberry!

There is a huge difference between chanting "a-hole a-hole" than there is in chanting "STTDB".

This guy gets it.

Trashy behavior? Yes.
Organized chants of an obscene nature by hundreds and hundreds of students? No. Gotohellolemiss was as bad as it got.

Yeah...that's not fully accurate. The appropriate cheer for Tiger Rag was, "HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!..a-hole! a-hole!" while pointing at the visiting section. I first heard this as a 12 year old at my first game in 1982... Also either that year or the year after, I had to have heard "what comes out of a chinaman's arse? RICE! RICE! RICE!" FYI...Rice is coming up on the schedule, though I'm assuming in 2018 our student section would be far more triggered by that little number than shouting about sucking Tiger dicks...

Did you go to the FSU game in 1982? I remember the fans throwing oranges after LSU scored then throwing them at everyone after the game as the fans stormed the field. One of the coolest game experiences ever!

This was my first ever LSU game. It was awesome!

One other memory I just though of as a kid. When I was 12 or 13 my buddy and I had to sit by ourselves because my dad couldn't find tickets for everyone together.
Old guy next to us had a flask of Beam and offered us a pour.

I was there and it sure was fun. The oranges were thrown at the field, not aimed at humans. Yes, a few people probably got hit but that was in the days before abundant liability lawsuits.

I don't recall the oranges being thrown at people, so that must have been after we left or only/mostly in the student section?

I’m not naïve enough to believe that there were not some jerks in the stands in the 50s and 60s. But if you think what is seen as acceptable hasn’t become much more liberal, you’re nuts. imo

It was after the fans went onto the field. At that point it was a free for all.

This...it was wild. You knew everyone around you bc they we're there every week. Now, you never know who you will sit next to.

I started going in 1958, I was six. The SE corner upper deck was called “The Family Section” so kids wouldn’t be exposed to cussing and fighting.
Generally in that area there was drinking and some cursing, but if you bothered other people, you’d be escorted out.
There were A LOT more fights, Five or six a game all over the stadium. Also lots of throwing up.
Go to hell ole miss was as bad as I ever heard and it was the first cheer I learned. My dad was a SeaBee from WWII and cussed a blue streak but not so bad during the game. Thousands brought in flasks and drank illegally.
We used to sit in the stands until the stadium was empty and they turned off the lights to avoid traffic. Plus my dad would finish his bottle!

Always a few knuckleheads

Go to hell Ole Miss

Otherwise, pretty laid back

Was more of a social affair and you pretty much knew the folks around you

Back in the day dress was to the 9s

The early 70s was a lot more tame. More coat and ties. One year, there was a letter to the editor asking people not to say Go to Hell Ole Miss. Still a lot of partying and drinking. There were fights. My date to one game punched a Tulane guy in the stomach because he said something vulgar. I liked her. Dressed up big time for homecoming with corsages for your dates. Simpler times, but still not Father Knows Best! It was very loud and no one left early.

This...Like said already....LSU has always had plenty of drunk fans and obscenities being thrown out, just never in such a vulgar and organized way. Chanting "hahahaha...a-hole" or "go to hell ole miss" was about as bad as it got in the 80's and 90's. Even the student section yelling "kick their arse" could barely be heard over the rest of the stadium cheering "LSU!" When I was in the student section, it would rain down bourbon and coke after LSU's first TD. I think they've even stopped that.

STTDB is just stupid in my opinion....Love Neck and how the whole stadium goes crazy, but for the love of God, just stop with the stupid chant.

I was at the LSU-FSU game in 1982 when the fans were chunking oranges on the field. There was an older fan pacing the stands behind us drinking straight from a pine of Jack Daniels with no attempt to hide it. He was throwing out some choice words. I don't remember an organized chant where the whole crowd yelled out. That would have been frowned upon at the time. But individual fans yelling out obscenities certainly happened.
