In general there was more respect and far less entitlement. Football team is better now, but not much else is.

It's not hypocritical to recognize that STTDB is a far cry from "a-hole", "kick their arse", "go to hell", or "you suck". Alas, it was my generation's fault though. STTDB came about just a few years after "you suck, cocks" which happened my senior year. The slightly younger group just wasn't as clever as us I suppose.

LSU & Tulane were bitter rivals big time...I was there I think 1984 when they had the biggest brawl I’d ever seen in college football at the end of the game... fights everywhere between the players & fans....I watched Shawn Burks level 2 Tulane players on top of an LSU player in the South end zone... I recorded the highlights on my VCR the next day from WWL sports..you can google the game and see the brawl videos there ..back in the day there weren’t many games shown on Tv as today so fans anticipated Saturday games in person a lot more than today...it was easier to park and traffic wasn’t nearly as bad ...the stadium was rocking always, Notre Dame, USC, Auburn, etc...my 1st LSU game ever was 1968 Sugar Bowl LSU vs Wyoming @ Tulane Stadium New Year’s Day... it was a cloudy day, light rain and cold...the stadium was made out of all steel structure and people were stomping their feet so much and so hard I could feel the whole structure shaking... what an expirience it was for me at my 1st LSU game ever at the ripe age of 12....LSU did go on to win 20-13 after trailing undefeated 5th ranked Wyoming and a running back named Jim Kiick 13-0 at halftime...drinking at games back in the day we’re prevalent but you didn’t hear nearly as much cussing as today’s games...

Go to hell Ole Miss, Go to hell, eat sh*t, was as bad as it got.
Yes, drunk people, however, kids were not as sheltered as they are now and people didn't get so offended back then.
I was an 10 yr old the first time I heard the Ole Miss chant in 1972. I didn't affect me for the rest of my life. People need to chill these days.

Back in the 70's through 90's, were games at Tiger Stadium this wholesome, american dream type family experience? Or are people just romanticizing an ideal which has never been real?

Although I don't live in B.R. anymore, I did attend LSU in the 80's and you are right, things were a lot different back then. Unfortunately those that "overdo" it with alcohol will occasionally do stupid stuff regardless of the venue. Sad, but true.

There were obscenities, mostly from drunks. There was no organized obscene cheer, except for Go to Hell, Ole Miss, Go to Hell.

That's all we expected to hear, and only that one game. Drunks shouting obscenities would be escorted out if someone reported/complained and they continued with security observing.

We sat near the student section, so we heard most of what they chanted. The traditional "Tiger Bait" chant when the opposing team would enter the field was replaced with "Boo"...tacky, but not obscene.

One year, the cheerleaders started to cheer, "Shove it! Shove it! Shove it on across that line big Tigers!" That was just asking for the obvious replacement of "shove it on up their *** big Tigers", which started before the first game ended. I think they tried it one more game and the substitution was made, so the cheer was done away with after that.

As a teenager I thought it was funny, but not the grown ups. I can only imagine how that generation would react to today's chants.

People in general cuss more nowadays than they ever did in public back in the 60s an 70s
Look at what has become standard in the news from politicians.
We have gone backwards as to standards for a civilized nation.

My first Tiger game as a young kid I saw LSU and ole Miss fans cursing and yelling at each other.

I was in awe and was also hooked.

I remember going to basketball games as a kid in the late 80’s/early 90’s and it was scandalous when the student section chanted “bullshite” at bad calls.

The "ho-mo-sexual" chant set the Seminole tomahawk chant at Christian Laettner was pretty bad.

When I was a kid in the seventies I remember seeing an obscene sign hung from a stadium dorm window and asking my dad about it.

A vivid memory, though not obscene, was when a central American dictator with some connection to LSU came to a game. The student section booed him when he was announced.

Tiger Stadium was off the chain in the 70's and 80's and there was no vulgarity.

NONE.

The occasional drunk would yell 'a-hole' or 'son of a bitch' but you never heard the F bomb or anything remotely resembling the filth that is in the stadium now.

The legendary games were very wholesome and good for young kids and this is when I started riding my bike to the stadium to attend games. It was incredible. Alabama, Ole Miss, USC, Washington, Notre Dame, these games were phenomenal and not dirty. All of the quotes about Death Valley came from this time period.

You don't have to be vulgar to create a great sports atmosphere. It's simply low class and gives LSU a horrible reputation.

Vulgarity doesn't make you shout louder or be more of a supporter, it just shows how poorly you were raised.

Yeah...that's not fully accurate.

The appropriate cheer for Tiger Rag was, "HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!..a-hole! a-hole!" while pointing at the visiting section. I first heard this as a 12 year old at my first game in 1982...

Also either that year or the year after, I had to have heard "what comes out of a chinaman's arse? RICE! RICE! RICE!"

FYI...Rice is coming up on the schedule, though I'm assuming in 2018 our student section would be far more triggered by that little number than shouting about sucking Tiger dicks...

People were sneaking alcohol in back then as well.

I was a middle school kid in the 90s and remember seeing fights in the stands.

So no, IMHO it was never a wholesome event.

In the early 70's I remember a fan having another fan thrown out of the stadium for cursing.
