re: QQ…. Is it that big of a deal to get a top 5 recruiting class if you have the Portal?

You’re always going to have an element of it. Kids are going to leave every year. Fill their spot with a transfer if needed. I don’t think you’re wrong, but then again you always will need it for short to intermediate gaps. Won’t always find a 5 star like Perkins who can play right away

There are not 30 immediate high impact players in the entire portal, much less are we signing all of them.

Whole different game now that don’t have to sit out a year after transferring thus those first 2 teams you listed are irrelevant for today’s rules
Georgia simply had more talent across the board than everyone else this year

Tbh recruiting rankings are bullshite anyway in my opinion.
Maybe. But only top recruiting teams have won the championship. So maybe there is a little something it. I mean if you are talking the difference between being the number 1 recruiting class vs the number 5 class, yeah the difference is subjective and negligible. But the difference between a top 5 class and a 20th to 25th rated class is significant.

You need great players to win championships, however you can get them, just get them.

There is an overall ranking which is a combination of HS Recruits and Portal Recruits. It is more accurate than a single list of either.

Players have been able to transfer without sitting out a year since 2020.

this makes me think about the quote from Bobby Bowden when he said something about it's not the ones you don't get that hurt you, but the one's you do get and don't pan out.
the way I see this is you still need to recruit HS at highest levels, but the portal allows you to correct on some of those that don't pan out. They can leave and you can upgrade. Of course if you don't miss on the ones you get, then you don't need the portal.

Well except for the fact that the teams competing for and winning championships every year are the teams that are consistently at the top of recruiting rankings.

It was one class. They were all freshman. Everyone knew a bunch of those guys took a paycheck and would leave after a year. But if that class had stayed together, they would have been competing for a championship at some point.

But playoff teams have filled needs through transfers over the years
LSU in 19 (Burrow)
OU in 19 (Hurts)
OU in 17 (Mayfield)
OSU in 20 (Fields)
Those are just off the top of my head
You obviously want to be top 5 in HS recruiting but utilizing the portal to supplement key positions or areas of need has proven to be very beneficial

I think the recruiting services are still trying to figure out how to accurately evaluate transfer players. So until those wrinkles are ironed out, it's hard to judge based on pure numbers. Including the transfer portal, I'd put LSU's incoming class up against any school in the country.

You still need a foundation of freshman coming in every year so you can develop depth. The portal is great for topping off a position but having to rely on it is a dangerous game.

He is not the only one rocking the portal but you still have to build through the high school ranks. I do like that he got a few younger pieces in the portal that he can build with but it still needs to be high school players first and then supplement what you need through the portal like Kelly is doing.

Maybe you'll have the oddball team that finds multiple different makers through the portal and gets to the playoffs that way, but in my opinion the core of a championship team will usually be built off of strong HS recruiting classes.
The transfer portal builds depth and fills in holes, it means the rebuilding period doesn't have to be as long for teams that want to take full advantage of it.
