QQ…. Is it that big of a deal to get a top 5 recruiting class if you have the Portal?

Yes and no. Tbh recruiting rankings are bullshite anyway in my opinion. But if you have a good HS class and you have established players already in the program or portal guys to fill needs. You’re able to develop the players into studs. It’s a long term solution to get HS guys. But in todays world you need a good mix of both honestly

I don't think the portal is necessarily good for a sustained program. You need high school kids, coming in, learning the system, getting used to the program, and developing. IF you want to sustain a program. That's simply the opinion of a fan and not an expert.

Relying on the portal year after year will lead to a good season now and then, maybe a year or so, but you'll have down years, again, my opinion.

It seems it’s becoming an even bigger deal to have a pocket full of cash to buy good players

The last 3 NC's (Bama, UGA, UGA) amassed their talented squads primarily through top 3 HS recruiting.

Yes. You will always need top level high school talent. The transfer portal is for plug and play guys for the most part to fill in roster holes. Just look at the ceilings between Harold Perkins and Speights (the LB we just picked up in the portal). Those are two different caliber players

It still counts but holds much less weight IMO.

A year later why does it matter that A&M had the GOAT class in 21 when 60% are already gone.

Also, the blue bloods can swing and miss on a 5 star QB and just hand pick a transfer and not miss a beat.

I wish they went back and ranked classes after each year.

Disagree. Look at who is winning the CFP. All high recruiting ranked teams baw.

TCU showed why they didn’t belong. Subpar players going up against true 5*s

I think the importance of high recruiting rankings will continue to be eroded to the point of obsolescence eventually. Remember the Wild West portal is in its infancy, and look at the effects on recruiting already.

I look at the Overall Ranking (Recruit + Transfer) on 247 now.

Recruiting Class - #7
Transfer Portal Class - #1
Overall Class - #4

Im not sure there is a specific number, but if you sign 25 and trade 7-8 kids in the portal, that would seem to be a good mix. You get rid of those not wanting to be here while not having to rebuild team chemistry every spring.

I would prefer to sign 3 or 4 five stars out of high school and round out the class with 30 guys from the portal that are immediate high impact players.

In this scenario the other programs are essentially like the minor leagues for us. They develop the talent and then we cherry pick the best of the best to play in the majors.

I think ideally you need to recruit good HS classes and, perhaps more importantly, retain as much of that talent as possible.

With the state of CFB today you’re going to lose some guys, particularly if you recruit top classes. But I don’t think having to completely rebuild through the portal every year is going to lead to sustained success for many programs. Those that can recruit well out of HS and retain that talent will be in a great position. Instead of having to fill holes in the portal, you can add depth or upgrade talent.

I also think getting really talented guys with 3-4 years of remaining eligibility will be a huge focus. Guys like Anderson and Harris (assuming he is aligned) basically turn into an extension of our 2022 class. And they are much less likely to transfer again.

The top 7 in the portal are just the top 7 in HS recruiting. It’s all the same. Just more ongoing now

It’s not either or

Tamu had the number one class didn’t make a bowl game. Establishing a winning culture has to come first. Need a good job at getting the kids to buy in.
