Punting is an issue. But how much of that stat is the defenses’ inability to get a 3 and out while the offense is stale at times? If the opposing team is at least getting 10-15 yards before punting every possession, that stat can be heavily skewed.

Special teams and defense are among the worst in the conference, however our fans continue to give BK a pass.

How on earth is it even possible to get stuck with a shitty arse punter in 2024?

There are probably 4-5 better punters at other LA schools right now. I'd think grabbing a punter off the portal would be like getting a new hammer at Lowes. Plenty on the shelf.

How do we still suck at this?

Not as much as you’d think. I’ve seen some D2 games this year where teams played bend-but-don’t-break defense, let the opposing team drive about 50 yards, barely force a punt, then drive enough to move the ball down the field enough to ultimately score touchdowns through a series of back-and-forth punts. They all have Australian kickers who can knock the snot out of the ball

Utter nonsense...doesn't LSU have 5 punters and PKs on scholarship? If that is not thinking it is important, should we have 10 on scholarship?

Quarterback isn't important either and neither is the worst offensive play either!

I know the offense made a bunch of mistakes against A&M but you can't tell me those frickups on FGs didn't sway the momentum in A&M's favor. It 100% did and is what kept them in the game. Also I never expected Ramos to be perfect let's say there were 7 attempts if he hit 5 I doubt A&M builds the momentum they did.

The Punting is pathetic and Ramos cant kick consistenly at 45yds...HS kickers do better.
Get Mcmahon from Tulane, BK can have unlimited coaches and ST have cost the team each year 1-2games....
Since BK is so disconnected from Day to day, I wonder if he knows that his lack of ST coaching cost them a game or two each season????

Punting is pretty fricking hard. Dropping a football and kicking it into a spiral that turns over is not easy. There are far fewer top quality punters than there are kickers.

Yet every other team in the league managed to do it.

If we have the resources to recruit Underwood, we have the resources to recruit a decent punter.

looks up Tulane’s Special Teams*
punter is avg 44yds/punt
80% field goal kicking, 0-1 from 50+

Let's look up his stats while he was at lsu.

And 80% is great for a Tulane kicker or really most college kickers.

Are you defending special teams at lsu under Brian kelly? Now that really isfunny

Ramos is at 78% and 1/2 from 50+.

So should Tulane have a better kicking game than lsu?

Does cade York ring a bell?

How about Tracy, the kicker mcmahon brought to lsu from some unknown college.

One or two punters a year out of high school get scholarships, it a tough position to recruit. I don’t think LSU is very good at judging special teams talent and they end up with some projects…even if they are highly ranked.

Aeron Burrell bio:

The top prep kicker in Louisiana and the nation’s No. 1 overall placekicker prospect by 247Sports … Ranked No. 2 nationally by On3 … Composite 3-star prospect … First-Team 5A All-State in 2022 … Three-time First-Team All-District selection … As a junior, had 51 touchbacks and converted 12-of-14 field goals … As a senior in 2023, kicked a 55-yard field goal setting the Bossier Parish record … The 55-yard field goal broke his previous record of 53 yds set during his junior season … Can also punt.

Seems obvious what to try Saturday.

Those rankings are for a kickoff specialist…they just fold them into the field goal kicker rankings for some reason. Can also punt means not a punter.

The other 2 can’t punt so give it a shot.

Full disclosure, you’re a much better expert. I’m just ranting. Sort of like Toviano should be playing.

We have Badger Hargett. He is a very good punter. For whatever reason we don’t go away from the scholarship guys ever.

Burrell has been a bright spot. He’s as-advertised the best freshman KOS in the country.

ETA: I have no idea of the workings of LSU, just have watched both the ‘23 walk ons at camps. Corbello and Hargett are both good. Was at Burrell’s one ranking camp as well.

From LSUSports.net.
2024 season:
Todd, 10 punts, avg 40.9 yds
Ochendorf, 9 punts, avt 41 yds.

As bad as our field position has been, not many of our punts are "pooch" punts, yet our "pooch punter" is punting further than our regular punter? Why not let Ochendorf go ahead and boom it when that's what is needed??

I know it was LA Tech and Conference USA, but his stats were pretty gaudy last year, and MUCH better than our punting stats this year.

quote:

Lead Conference USA and ranked 16th nationally with a 45.72 punting average … Lead CUSA with a 48.09 punting average during league play which is the third-best mark nationally in league games… Leads Conference USA with 17 punts of 50 or more yards this season … Had 17 punts of 50+ yards, the most by a LA Tech player in over a decade … 18 of his punts were downed inside the 20 yard line which ranked second among all CUSA punters … Opponents fair-caught 25 of his punts, the most among all CUSA punters
