Police finds man dead during welfare check, steals his home

A Florida police officer who found a man dead during a welfare check in 2022 is accused of taking possession of the man’s home and impersonating him for years while fixing up the place, authorities said.
The officer said he took possession of the property weeks after discovering the homeowner's body to “prevent squatters from taking control of it,” according to a court document he filed.
Investigators in South Florida have accused Lauderhill police officer Brian Sguros of carrying out a “complex scheme” to take control of the $400,000 home. They say he made it appear the man was still alive by using his identification to pay taxes on the property and obtain permits to make repairs.

Sguros said in another court document that he took over the property “believing that by cleaning, securing, and restoring a dangerous and abandoned residence he was acting lawfully and responsibly to protect the surrounding community.”
He argued that he made no attempts to hide what he was doing.
It spent $200,000 of his own money making repairs

But after the real estate group later acquired deeds to the property, he filed a civil case against the company seeking to be reimbursed for the money he spent on repairs

I'm confused on how this plan was supposed to work. The dead owner's name is surely on the deed.
During the selling process, I'd imagine something would need to be notarized and he'd have to show identification.
I guess his plan was just to keep it for the rest of his life and screw over his wife/kids/etc?
ETA: from the article
I'm sure they were pleased with the free renovation!

Court documents in a related civil case show that the officer's attempt to take possession of the two-story house in a tidy neighborhood just outside Fort Lauderdale became known after a real estate group bought the house from the man's relatives in 2025.

Squatting should have no rights to property.

Because that's how home ownership works now
We've done away with Closings & Titles etc.

This retard really spent 200,000 on repairs to a house he did not own and then thought things would just work out

I know a woman who once did something similar to a guy, except he is still alive.
She is my wife.
She is my wife.

Like taking meth off a dealer and saying "Well, I didn't want kids to stumble upon this meth!"

It sounds like he was trying to do adverse possession and get a quiet title action.

So he prevented squatters by squatting?

He is a piece of shite while at the same time pretty fricking smart.

If he was pretending like the guy was still alive, what did he do with the body?

I do like that show where those guys move into squatted homes and become their forced roommates until the squatters leave.

Gotta make it for 7 years in bad faith. Baw was a few years away.
