I buy the magazine every year but I'd like it a lot more if he didn't spend 1/4 of the time trying to convince us how ACCURATE all his prior predictions are. The fact that he still points out that he correctly picked R Williams to win the Heisman in 98 should tell you something.

This.

I will concede that Phil Steele does a better job of preseason analysis than anybody else. He's a great number-cruncher, and has a very good understanding of the game. His magazine is entertaining reading.

I will also guarantee you that Phil Steele makes WAY more money from selling his magazine than he does in Vegas.

It is smoke and mirrors for the most part.

He doesn't solely rank teams on strength, he ranks them primarily on their schedule.

So his rankings are apples and oranges compared to the other rankings. He might think LSU is a much better team than USC, But still ranks LSU lower because of the schedule.

His rankings are a microcosm of why're failures of a subjective ranking system.

No. Go back and read my response again. His logic as to why we would lose is because he said that the TCU win doesn't look good anymore.

He is a hack for using the transitive property, and for picking Texas and Southern Cal to finish in the top 5. Anyone with any sense would not have picked Southern Cal to finish in the top 10.

You're wrong. Over the last 6 years, Steele's mag ha been the 5 th most accurate of all the preview mags. He isn't as accurate as his myth is.

Not sure if serious....This guy picked LSU to lose half their games in '11!

We are toast. After all he puts out THE MOST ACCURATE PRESEASON MAGAZINE 11 YEARS RUNNING.

So he's marketing to gambling degens. That's fine, can't knock his hustle.

I wager on games myself occasionally, but something I've learned pretty quickly is that anyone that's successful in consistently making money off of their bets isn't giving their picks away. The very best of them don't tell anyone their picks.

Phil Steele is the most overrated prognosticator in sports. Every time I've bought his magazine, which has been like three times, he's been wrong on over half his predictions.

He's been on a steady decline for several years now. People/bettors buy his magazines for the info and stats not his predictions and ratings.

i hate that steele was given a 2nd chance in 11 to get bama as the NC.

i remember him bitching after the 9-6 game not being able accept the outcome.

that said, there's nothing wrong with taking the home team in what's viewed as an even matchup.
