It was $2 if you were family of faculty to swim there when I was younger. Last time I went there was 96/97

If this is true, I can't count how many times I was in and out of that place during livestock shows. We roamed all over that Coliseum, in and out of locker rooms.

If true, then I hate I didn't know this back when I was participating in the LSU livestock shows.

Do you remember how to access the locker rooms that you saw?

its a true story and it was the longest in the world

Official lenght of an Olympic sized swimming pool is 164 feet or 50 meters. Obviously, whomever is saying the pool is 51 yards long must mean 51 meters. And I seriously doubt it was the longest pool in the world. Jesus Green Swimming Pool in England, though only 15 yards wide, is among the longest outdoor swimming pools in Europe at 100 yards. It was built in 1923.

This page says that it was built to be the longest in the "country" at that time, not the world. 180 Feet long and 48 feet wide.

There were doors on the coliseum floor that would lead back to locker rooms and then out into the coliseum hallway. We'd be on the floor of the colieum and just go through the doors. None of these were locked since nothing was going on in there, besides the livestock show.

You couldn't get down there during the rodeos, but during the livestock shows you could go where ever you wanted. At least, that is what I remember from back in the 70s and 80s.

In 2000 they still had water in the pool. We snuck in at night and went in it a few times. Did the same at the natatorium till the cops came. I met some foreign exchange students who brought kayaks into the Huey Long pool. Fun times were had.

Anyone know why the pool was closed? That could be a bad arse place to tailgate with a working pool and women in small bikinis!

We used to sneak into the pool late at night back in the 70's, but I can't recall exactly how we got in.

We also played late-night basketball in the old gym nearby. We boosted a friend up to the window one night and he dropped inside. The plan was for him to come around and unlock the door for the rest of us. Problem was, the door couldn't be unlocked from the inside. He found a crow bar or something and went to work on the lock. When he finished, you could just slip the lock out and open the door. For at least a semester, we'd go at night, pull the lock out, go inside, turn on the lights and play basketball, then just slip the lock back in when we were through playing. I guess no one ever knew or cared.

Love these stories! I've seen the pool from the top of the staircase and always found it fascinating. They really should renovate it one day.

I visited the Ag Center again today and I guess they were setting up for a rodeo/show of some sort since there were some metal rails on the dirt floor. I was over on that end and a few doors on the outside of the metal casing were locked. I guess my mission to find the lockers is coming to an end, unless anyone has any idea on how to access it now since the old rodeo doors are gone.

I appreciate all of the insight!

Pics of Huey P Long FH

Cool pics of a past treasure. Cool place 11 years ago back when the LSUPD didn't pay attention to it. Word of caution: Don't try breaking in these days!

Are there any other sports-related "secrets" to LSU outside of the Maravich locker and Huey P. Long Pool?

Does anyone know why it was neglected like that in the first place?
Back in the '80s, I was told that the pool was originally closed due to a crack in the bottom caused by an earthquake back in the '60s or '70s. Apparently there was a significant quake up in the midwest (Missouri or so) that sent minor tremors as far south as Baton Rouge, enough to jostle the foundation and cause a miniscule crack that made the pool unsafe.

ETA: Apparently I was mislead, as it seems the pool has been open much more recently than that.

I think it had more to do with the new rec center opening across campus.

When the drivers on the swim team used the pool, they had to be real careful because the deep end was really not deep enough, it had a sharp raise from deep to shallow to soon and some would hit bottom. Frat brothers of mine were on the swim team and we would sneak in the pool in the late 70's. Don't remember how. Very cool place.

Sneaking into the Tiger Stadium dorms.

I've heard a few of these are still serving as old storage rooms for random archives and records, not necessarily football related. But still...old helmets, unis, photos and the like have been rumored to be in a couple of them.

I have my doubts though.

Man it's a shame that the pool hasn't been kept up. This pic really shows its old glory.

That thread about LSU campus secrets was mine. I'll dig back through my old threads and find it... then I'll link it here.

The door to Pete's old locker room in the cow palace is on the north-northeast side of the dirt floor. The door actually opens onto the dirt floor. There is no "back door" opening onto the concourse. This is the only way into the locker room. The writing denoting pete's specific locker is gone, but everything else about the room remains untouched. It's a time warp, and cool as hell to just soak up the vibe.

EDIT: My post history only lets me go back 14 pages, and the "LSU Campus Secrets" thread was earlier than that. Chicken should have made it a classic post, since the thread had around 10 million posts in it. Seriously, it went on for a lot of pages.
