Perkins comments at the weekly presser
Posted by HC87

From Dandy Don this AM: Asked about Harold Perkins, Kelly essentially admitted that they made a mistake in moving him to middle linebacker and made the right decision to move him back to the outside.
“We wanted to free him up a little bit. He’s got a lot of responsibilities playing inside and we just needed to let him play fast. We felt like with all the things we had asked him to do, we probably slowed him down a little bit. I think we made the right decision there, and now we’ll refine what we do with him — like we can move him around, inside and outside, and do some things that can keep him in a position to impact the game.”
Spot on from CBK - put the player in the best position to impact the game. While it definitely hurt us vs FSU, I'm glad to see an adjustment did not take long. Turn him loose, with the DL, vs Rogers & Miss St.

CBK made the bone-headed decision to move him out of position in the first place. Maybe he is too smart by half. Now if he can figure out the QB position.

Will run away from him unless House does a better job of disguising him.

Put the kid in the best position to impact the defense.
So far State has become a run first team. We will need to stop the run. We will have to be sound and we will need to keep our gap integrity. This won’t be an air raid show.

Somebody told me Perkins asked to be moved inside to help his draft stock. Not sure if true or not.

If that’s true, someone gave him some bad advice. All he had to do was look @ the contracts of outside pass rushers vs Ilb’ers.

Somehow a rant myth that Brian Kelly is hardheaded and doesn’t change things that aren’t going right started even tho he has proven that he isn’t afraid to change things up when he thinks an alternative option will help the team.

It wasn't a bone headed position. Harold Perkins if he learns the MLB position could be one of the best ever. Kelly must've thought he could handle it at an elite level. Perkins just didn't develop at the position like Kelly thought he would.
So now Kelly is just using him like Micah Parsons, which is fine.

quote:It's easy to say this after seeing the FSU game, but calling it a "bone-headed decision" is ridiculous. In theory, with Smith and Wingo in the middle of the d-line, Perkins could have been free to flow to the ball wherever it went and Speights was there to support. That isn't how it panned out, so instead of continuing to force a square peg into a round hole the coaching staff is changing directions. At least they recognize it and are adjusting.
CBK made the bone-headed decision to move him out of position in the first place.

Compare size and weight of the elite pass rushers with Perkins’ size and weight and Perkins doesn’t measure up.

Go back and look at how A&M took him out of the game by just running the ball and you see why he needed to move to ILB.
the issue was we stopped doing what he was good at.
you want him pass rushing and spying mobile QBs.
you just need to add to that not take away from it

Stop. Perkins isn't Micah Parsons. He isn't TJ Watt. He's 6'1" and 220 lbs and looks a step slower with his added weight from the offseason. If he wants to be a full-time rusher, he needs to add 30 lbs and switch to DE.
He's best role in the NFL will be MLB, just like Devin White. Close in size, plays the exact same role and can do it well. To sit Perkins at Edge for the next 2 years would be doing this guy a disservice and everyone in the program knows it.

I don’t know where his permanent position should be, but if he is an every down defender, he needs to be able to stop the run too.
People also forget who he was paired with. BJ Ojulari was a beast as a DE versus the pass. You couldn’t double team or chip both guys. Perkins prospered with BJ.

It’s like a shiny new toy. Let’s see all of the things it can do …….except the one thing it was made to do. Move him around , but line him up and make the other team block him with one or two guys. The worst part about the FSU game is that the Noles didn’t have to use a blocker on him. Allowed them to double and triple Wingo all night.

IMHO, he is not an every down player yet.

What bothers me most about this is, if I am not mistaken, the guy who was going to be our starting MLB transfered to Auburn.... obviously once it was announced Perkins would move to MLB, he rolled out for playing time. And you really can't blame him. This single decision has really hurt us.

He is going to have to learn to play in coverage if he wants a career in the NFL. Trying to develop that skill was not bone headed, it was doing what is best for him in the long term. Unfortunately he did not pick it up as fast as they wanted and they are switching gears.
