I wouldn't expect that. But teams can be built in different ways now than just loading up on 5 star HS players. The prevalence of transfers completely changes how teams are built.
Best case scenario: He's able to salvage a few players from the current LSU roster, then dives hard into the transfer portal to produce an Iowa St. type turnaround. 2-22 last season. Lost 11 players. Picked to finish last in the Big 12.....currently preparing to play Miami in the Sweet 16
(Reasonable) worst case: He has a few solid years, but nothing that really moves the needle...ultimately leading to him being fired after 5-6 seasons (like the last two Murray St. HC's who left for power conf. jobs)
Again, he's not someone who I'm overly excited about getting the job. But we don't know what the LSU job currently looks like to the coaching world. It probably would be hard to pull an established HC from a good situation at a power conf to take over at LSU right now.

No "big name" coach is walking into this mess right now. Let's clean up the ship and get back to moving again.

Murray St. is always good. Every one of their coaches since like the early 90s has had some measure of success. I'm not sure what amount of their recent success could be attributed to McMahon, but I'm going to choose to be optimistic. At least he's a young guy and not some retread like Andy Kennedy.
I'll give him a chance definitely could have done worse

Someone take him to Phil's and show him the back room, please.

Good post. But when I say recruiting, I’m talking about the transfer portal too. It’s recruiting just like high schoolers they just have been in college for a few years. But it’s the same recruiting skill

Last 3 murray state coaches have shite the bed at P5 schools.

Solid hire given the circumstances. Without having a great deal of knowledge about their pre-LSU careers, he seems about on par with Wade when we hired him, if not a bit better.

If he's not willing to do what it takes, we're screwed, but maybe he's smarter than Wade and will hire a middle man/fall guy to be a buffer.

Far better coach than Wade!
If he wins the SEC in year 2.
If not, I guess he isn’t.

Lot of twitter comments saying this is a really good hire and Murray State folks definitely didn’t want him leaving FWIW

He betta at least have a few men carrying bags.

Anybody else think that since we got a guy so fast that maybe the sanctions are already known? That way they could communicate to coach what to expect. Seems like he would stay there are go to the other schools that showed interest in him if the sky was falling at LSU
