Agreed.

- we got beat in the trenches....

- OL did fairly well, but as a squad not that well. As an example saw Deculus crush a DE down 2 or 3 techniques leaving the edge wide open and the middle got stymied with no movement. That happened alot, 4 good blocks and one bad equaled no gain.

- Considering UCLA was determined to have numbers every play, OL did pretty good in pass blocking. Turner wasn't getting it done very well, but alas- the name of the game when blitzing like that is WRs stepping up and the QB on target while hurried and the OL giving those WRs enough time to get into a read-hot route. Overall, did ok.

- RBs lack vision. See above, RBs are running into trouble, not away from it.

- DL was extremely disappointing from the aspect of expectations. Yes, UCLA OL is very good. Not that good and our DL is supposed to be elite. To be fair it was the edges that killed us. Can't set the edge to save our life... and their RBs had the vision to take advantage.

- LBs killed us on D. When my daughter was 2 she was harder to fool.

- WRs played well, but drops/failures seemed to be extremely critical moments. TDs, first downs, turning points. Playmakers make plays- when needed. Just seems to lack oompf or "it" factor.

- I think DBs played well; numbers say so. In run support the LBs and D scheme failed them. Benefit of a zone is DBs have eyes front and can help support earlier in the play. But they aren't supposed to be the first line of defense except a couple times a game. Where were the S's though.

Yes, offensive scheme is good- I agree. Could have run some zone-read to jack with those blitzs though.
Majority of them came off the edge. Could've used that and got them thinking more than charging some. Defensive scheme... not so sure. Coaching is bad though. Bad techniques everywhere except for Raymond's group.

Linebackers and safeties. DE's got pressure on passing plays but couldn't set an edge to save their lives.

The middle of the field was wide open all game long. Look how out of place the defenders (except Eli) were. Of course, Harris bit on the bootleg.

Except for only being able to call zone runs while the Oline got its shite pushed in. And calling for bunch formations while UCLA called blitz after blitz, making it more difficult for the QB to recognize the pressure (same issues presented by Clemson in 2019. In response LSU spread the field). Oh and the overall lack of playcalling to get the ball out quickly to counteract the UCLA pressure.

But yeah. The offense was fine.

Excluding QB scrambles, the team rushed 14 times for 33 yards.

I try to be fair, but we suck on both sides of the ball. Some one needs to teach LSU how to tackle! UCLA has a pretty good team but right now LSU sucks, long season !

What is his scheme.

Dink and dunk and pray the defense misses tackles?

Offensively we looked out of sorts. We have got to implement some type of ways to stretch the field horizontally if the defense is blitzing up the middle every play.

Id like to see some jet sweeps with Palmer or Boutte or even some type of bubble screen to the WR's. I did not see any type of adjustments made by Peetz which worries me alot moving forward

Came out in the second trying to establish the run, and quickly abandoned.

Slight adjustment, quickly left behind.

As to Peetz: the plays were there for us to win the game.

We didn’t execute.

BUT I am Disappointed that we still only seem to have 1 rushing play. It’s just inside zone. No misdirections, sweeps, counters, outside zone runs. None of that.

The defense looked like they had no clue. LB play might be the worst I’ve ever seen at LSU. Scheme and play calling was predictable and bland. Aranda was creative even in a bend don’t break style.

I didnt Hate the scheme on defense, but the execution again was an issue. We did seem to mix man and zone, but our Lbs and Safeties just didn’t know their assignments.

Lsu cannot run the football. Couldn't last year and can't this year. That ain't gonna change this season.

DE's and OLBs do not know how to defend the run. It was obvious.

What did you see that you liked from the play calling? It was the first game and things can really improve from game 1 to 2 and as the season progresses, but I saw a total lack of creativity with the play calling. I saw nothing different from last year. The O-line was awful, but our running plays were predictable as ever. Nearly all of our passing plays seemed to be straight dropbacks that had Max throwing off of his back foot due to relentless pressure. I saw nothing that I was excited about scheme-wise in the play calling on Saturday and we took forever to get the plays called.

I think Max will be fine with better OL play. I think the WRs have great potential and Boutte is obviously a star. Our running game is a huge question mark at this point with the injuries, academic issues and predictable play calling combined with the O-line play. When your QB who is under relentless pressure has the longest rush of the game for your team, you have some offensive issues.

What? 35 second play call relay, abandoned the run game, 15yrd routes on short down and distance, no second half adjustments.

His scheme was as bad as his play calling. You’d figure he would at least tell Max at halftime, “hey, they are killing you with the blitz, make your primary read and then go to your check down/hot route.” But no.

Stepping back from the ledge a bit:

This was not the year to open against a UCLA or other Power 5 team on the road.

On even footing, this game is a tossup.
If LSU opened with a a cupcake (as UCLA did), and Johnson and Peetz were able to get their feet wet without worries, and UCLA had opened with us afterwards, we probably win.

If we both played a game, this is competitive.

UCLA knew their schemes, and polished things up last week. We are learning our schemes, trying to figure out what works and who to go to. Doing that under duress against a solid P5 team with a game under their belt... just not the right time to do that. The game will slow down for Johnson (and Peetz), and the tempo will pick up. I'm not worried about the offense, as bad as it was we should have scored 30 (that FG penalty), and with some cleaning up we score more.

The defense, God help us. The Linebacker coach better have a Pre-K edition, looks like we have to start from scratch. I don't know if Jones' scheme is bad overall, or if it's just gigantic holes in the LB and safety areas.
