Dale can be seen throughout the game signaling for the “Freak Defense”.

Did great until he ran into Bob Knight's "Freak offense".

Moron??? He did absolutely embarrassing work with the best talent from 1989-1992.

Moron is the nicest thing I could call you for saying that there were more bad games than good games in the Dale Brown era. Be fair. The games in the Dome were epic and memorable to this day with the W against #2 Georgetown at the buzzer, etc. LSU beat one of the greatest teams of all time in 1990 UNLV who won the national championship by 30 points over Duke. Then there was the Loyola Marymont game, Arizona, etc.

They clearly underachieved in the Shaq and CJ year, but most people don't remember that CJ was sick for the GT game and only scored 13 points. Also, GT (Lethal Weapon 3) was a phenomenal team that had 3 eventual 1st round NBA picks on the team (including the #2 and #4 overall picks in the draft) and that team went to the Final Four. College basketball was loaded back then. Shaq wasn't what he could become offensively his freshman year either. They underachieved though either way.

But LSU overachieved a lot during the Brown era. The 86 team shouldn't have sniffed the Final Four with everything that happened, but they became the first #11 seed to ever make the Final Four and no one has surpassed that 40 years later.

The game you refer to was against Georgetown but it was a regular season game.

Fair enough. It's only 40 years ago.

The most talented team has to be the 1981 final 4 team

I'd say it was the most talented first 6. The bench was thin.

Tyrone Black was a streaky offensive player who provided nothing else, Jones was a frosh who was often out of control, Tudor would improve later in his career but was not really ready for meaningful PT at this stage in his career.

CJ sucked only scoring 13 points.

Chris Jackson had the flu all that week and was not fully recovered when they played Georgia Tech with their three first round draqft picks.

One of his best was beating Kentucky in 1978 at the Assembly Center in overtime with all of his starters fouled out.

1981 Final four team was super thin on the beach, only Sims was a very good payer off the beach.

I was at the final four games, Thomas should have fouled out, as Ethan was quicker than him and the two fouls on Ethan late in the first have, should have been charges.

With Mac and Howard hurt LSU had razor thin margin to win by, Ethan taking the two fouls ended what little chance we had to win.

Had LSU won, I do not see any way for LSU to beat North Carolina or Virgina. NC front line was healthy, Virgina outside shooters killed LSU and allow Raph to overplayin the middle.

No worries at all, didn't take it that way. I figured my memory, or what's left of it, was a bit off.

I was so fn pissed when we choked that 16 point lead to GT in 1990 when we had CJ, shaq and stanley. what a waste of talent.

now GT had some studs also tho. dennis (3D) scott and kenny anderson. they hit 8 three pointers in that game.
Georgia Tech was good that year, they went to the Final 4.

The best I could tell he would alternate between a diamond and one and a triangle and two and sometime signal to change between the two in mid-possession.

But there was absolutely some theatre in it for Dale, who was VERY sensitive to criticism - I think most of us are but Dale was acutely - he started to take it personal when other coaches would say - oh it's nothing but a diamond and one - or something of that nature and kind of dismiss it as nothing novel....and Dale of course took that as dismissing him as a coach.

So he started being really coy and mysterious about it and enjoyed that part of the dance alot it seemed to me.

Yes, our 'claim to fame' from those years was we lost to the eventual champs for 3 consecutive seasons: '79 to Michigan St and Magic Johnson, '80 to Louisville and Darryl Griffin, and '81 to Indiana and Isaiah Thomas {really Bobby Knight}. Great teams and great memories for an old man - one of the Who Dats from the student section.

John Chaney whined about how 'rough' we were.

22-5 lead at one point. Yes. GT had Anderson, Scott, and Oliver — all guards (Scott was a small forward maybe). Their inside game with Mackey and McNeil was average. That’s where we exploited them, but we could not stop their outside game.

And yes, CJ was sick.

But we should have won. One thing GT had very little of was bench. They went 7 deep at best. And it was a weak bench. We win that game and we play UNLV again in the final 4.
