1987 2nd round vs second seed Temple. LSU and the freak defense. Temple had a big man (Rivas) who had been killing opponents. And a bad arse forward named Perry. Dale can be seen throughout the game signaling for the “Freak Defense”.

Nikita Wilson has the deadliest turn around jump shot. And this team, who had to scratch and claw their way into the tourney, played defense like no other LSU team. Bernard Woodside and Oliver Brown and Daryl Joe were shut down defenders.
Temple had 3 losses that season aside from us — UNLV, Kansas, and @WVU. 17-1 in conference play.

Coach Brown, rip.

I remember the term, but what was essentially the "freak" defense?

A few times a year he'd come down to the auxiliary gym in the AC (No PM then) basement and talk to us GBFTL Basketball Band guys who played an informal pickup game before every home game. Sometimes a player would come down too. He'd tell us how much he appreciated our hard work and dedication. (It wasn't WORK to any of us though. We loved it)

I think it was a box and 1, or a triangle and 2.

Basically, zone in the paint and 1-2 guys playing man to man on perimeter.

Per Chat…

The closest modern basketball terminology would be an “amoeba defense” or, more broadly, a hybrid/man-zone defense.

Brown's Freak Defense was unusual because it didn't have one fixed alignment. The defense changed based on where the ball went and other offensive cues. Brown described one sequence where:

- Ball-handler goes right ? man-to-man
- Passes to the left wing ? 2-3 zone
- Passes to the right side ? 2-1-2 zone

So the players were essentially switching defensive identities on the fly, rather than simply rotating within one traditional zone.

It was a box and one. Oliver brown was the defensive specialist. The 1987 run was my favorite of all.

The sport is missing characters like Dale and John Chaney these days.

Im shocked an LSU basketball team sorted out the Temple 1-3-1 matchup zone

Brown blew his share of games, but he also took a piece of shite program and went to 15 straight tournaments, 4 Elite Eights, 2 Final Fours, 4 SEC Championships and had the 2nd most wins in SEC history when he retired. There were a ton more great games than losses, you moron.
